• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

My four-year-old Canon camcorder died on me a few months ago. One lesson I learned from it is that I can't buy the kind of camcorder I need for low-light storm environments without paying a lot more than I can afford. Given the choice to spend $500 on a crappy camcorder or a really decent digital camera, the camera seems like a no-brainer to me.

Any recommendations for a good camera in the $500 range? I'm obviously thinking of something that will function well in low light, and otherwise serve well for storm chasing.

At that price point, the best bet would be the Canon Digital Rebel XTi with the kit lens that comes with it. I'd wait at least a month or two, though; the newer XSi is coming out and will drive the price of the XTi (a perfectly good camera) down.

Nikon D40

As for low light, it's not the same as camcorders, it's the lens you choose. Larger the aperture (f/2.8 for example), the faster the shutter will be. I think the threshold is 1/60 of a second or faster, handheld. Bumping up the ISO will get you quicker shutter speed as well, but the noise starts to increase. Hope this helps!

I just bought a XTi after doing a bit of research on the XSi. The pixel density increase with the same size sensor is what pushed me to go with the XTi. I want something with low noise in low light and that's not going to happen with the XSi's increased density. Plus the price of the XTi kit was like $600 and the XSi kit is coming out around $900+. The XSi comes outs sometime in April which is way too late for me. For the price difference I order extra batteries, waterproof case, memory, extended warranty, RF wireless remote. That was stuff I would need anyways. I can't see a down side going with the XTi as most of the best photos I've seen have came out on this or it's predicesors.
