I was looking at Maximum Signal's website at the amps they have, I was wondering if anyone here uses an amp for their datacard. Is it worth the investment? Is there a noticeable difference having the amp? Better signal strength, better service?

Yes much better reception with the amp and external antenna - a great investment. BTW stay clear of the wilson amp - I have burnt two out so far !!! The maximum signal amp just works :)

I would seriuosly disagree. I have both a maximum signal amplifer and Wilson Electronics and the Wilson Electronics is much better without a doubt.

I use this one http://www.wilsonelectronics.com//ViewProduct.php?ID=127

What I do is lay my data card across the bottom of the cell phone holder and then clip my cell phone on above it (using the air card as support under it. There are 4 inward sliding clips to hold it in place so it works great, but it is especially good if you use bluetooth, which I do, so you don't have to take your phone in and out all the time.

One of my chase partners works for verizon. We both have the blackberry storm. I had mine in the cradle when we were chasing about a month ago and had full signal strenght. He was in the back seat and had no bars, so just to screw around I had him hand me the phone and as I got it within a few feet of my cradle his signal strenght jumped up to full. I can promise you it is an incredible piece of equipment. I wish like hell I had been using an amplifer before this year.

I will agree that Maximum Signal (it's a one man operation and I forget his name right now) did replace the first cyfre amp I got because it wasn't working, but the replacement one still doesn't compete with my wilson and the one I have from cyfre is direct connect so it's supposed to work better than wireless systems.

If somebody brings up that I'm sponsored by Wilson Electronics my answer to that is I wasn't sponsored by them until this whole issue came about. I was so pissed that I got talked into buying an inferior product on stormtrack (scroll back and you can read the thread) that I started talking with Wilson and now we are working together. My integrity is worth a lot more to me then free equipment and/or money so do whatever you want, but I am telling you that Wilson is hands down the better way to go. I would never work with or be sponsored by a company that didn't sell a quality product unless they were shelling out some serious cash lol and believe me that's not the case. I'm not even on a commisions deal.

If you do want a cyfre for an aircard pm me and I will sell you a brand new one. I only hooked it up one time. I still have the box and everything. It is a direct connect so you will get the strongest signal possible (they work slightly better than the wireless versions). I had this model from Maximum Signal http://www.wilsonelectronics.com//ListProducts.php?Type=12 and when I had to have it replaced he sent me what he said was that version in a direct connect and it was actually more expensive. I didn't see it on his website and it's at home in my closet (at work now), but I'll knock off $100 and sell it to you. It is in it's original packing and literally brand new.

The Maximum Signal guy will back up his product in my experience, but he was pretty rude and abrasive at times. That doesn't matter much if you get your product so take it for what it's worth.
If you do want a Wilson pm me and I'll tell you the best place to go to get one. If you want the Cyfre from Maximum signal, like I said I'll sell you mine, so PM me on that too.

Any antenna - is better than NO antenna.
It lends a great deal of consistency to the signal.
If you are in an area where signal strength is known for being very poor; then flip on the amp.
An external antenna will fill the need 80% of the time...

I agree with Stuart, Maximum Signal is a great company and has great products. I switched to a Maximum Signal amp after the previous Wilson Amps I had got extremely hot and stopped working - both of them. The Maximum Signal amp I have works just as good or better than Wilson and never gets hot, in fact, it barely gets more than what I would call warm.

The customer service at Maximum Signal is top notch. When I placed my order online, Gordon (the owner) called me immediately after I placed my order to confirm I ordered the correct equipment for what I had. A+ all around for Maximum Signal.

I'm in the process of upgrading my VZW cell phone. FOI, none of their newer phones, from basic to Blackberry, have an external antenna connection. Although my USB aircard does have a socket, this is a definite trend, I think, that will soon carry over to all 3-4G devices.

What this means in practice is that a wireless amp will be needed to service these devices. Before it was swiped last year I had a Cyfre DBSW819 wireless amp from Maximum Signal which seemed to perform ok. I put hook Velcro on the back of the inside antenna which gave flexibility in attaching to the headliner material or to loop Velcro for best performance. Am looking to replace it with the new and improved SVW819 model. This amp would serve all cell phones and aircards in the vehicle.

I use a simple antenna with my Verizon Wireless UM175 modem.

After my purchase of this antenna, my signal stays pretty constant. Of course we all know finding ourselves in certain situations we'll loose signal so i'll probably be purchasing an amplifier.

x2! I bought one of these for my verizon usb modem, and it raises my signal from 2 bars in the house up to 5 bars full, and it's not even placed by the window.

these are excellent and when I go out chasing locally, I stick it on the roof of the car, and i get good reception all the time.

How do the wireless amps work? It wouldn't seem to be as effective as a hard wired amp. Anyone have a technical description of how they work?

I bought The Ultimate EVDO kit from Maximum Signal this past April and it’s made a noticeable improvement both at home and on the chase. Two examples that reflect a direct relationship to superior signal strength as a result of using the amp:

I inadvertently lost power to the amp near North Platte and the difference between amplified vs. non-amplified was not only evident it was substantial; from quick loads with amp on to slow crawl with amp off to quick loads with amp on again.

Without the amp I get one bar at home, two at the most. With the amp I get full bars.

My chasing experience this year was definitely improved by having superior signal strength; I rarely lost connection this year while in the past I’ve lost connection in places where signal strength should have been strong (e.g. interstates, cities). For the most part I got EVDO REV A and loading speeds were faster in rural areas than I’ve experienced previously in some urban areas. I’m not only satisfied with the amp I think it was a great buy, proving to be a valuable addition to my chase equipment and beneficial at home as well.

I lost coverage a few times in HP and rural areas just with a small antenna. I'll need to look into an amplifier, that'll be a good idea not only for my phone but internet as well.

My contract next year will require me to give in the field interviews and stream live, coverage is VERY important in that situation.

These sure aren't cheap components though..

www.3gstore.com is another source for amps from which I've had several favorable purchases. They also maintain www.EVDOinfo.com and www.EVDOforums.com that have a lot of useful info. There's a "glossary" link on the 3gstore page that explains many of the terms, e.g. amplifier, in more detail.

The wireless amp is a multi-channel repeater and so the interior vehicle signal has to be rather weak and shielded from the tower signal so as not to interfere. A direct connect amp doesn't have that issue, but only can service a single device. The interior vehicle signals only have to travel a few feet, so they can get by with low power.

If you only have one EV-DO* device (cell or aircard) with an external antenna port, then a direct-connect amp is probably the way to go. If you have several devices and/or no external antenna port, then a wireless amp fills the bill.

without a doubt the amp/booster with the antenna makes all the difference in the world! Personally I think I have dropped coverage for a very brief moment in North Dakota. That was this year and I had flawless coverage otherwise.
