Dancing with the Devil (Why no basements?)

Bottom line...basements cost money. Most people would prefer to spend that money elsewhere. Plus, even in the heart of "Tornado Alley" the chance of any one home getting hit by strong (EF2+) tornado winds is roughly once every 2,000 to 10,000 years.

I too was one of those people that thought "that'll never happen to me" or "all the storms go around us". Until a F-4 crossed my path in 2004. We were completely unprepared, electricity went out early so no T.V., Siren, or radio (yes it's true, we did not have batteries for our radio). We did however make a plan of where to go if it got bad. And when we saw the debris flying and just as the windows blew in we ran into the walk-in cooler at the local pub we were at. Unfortunately, 1 of the older folk in our little town did not hear or see it coming and lost her life.
When we rebuilt we did put in a storm shelter. But, since then, then most important thing I own is a Weather Radio (and yes I have the battery back up installed). Everyone should have one!
