I wanted to share how my wife and I look for cheap hotel rates. We used to stop at hotels/gas stations and pick up a little green book that had coupons in it for cheap hotel rates. Its gotten harder to find, so now we just use the online version of the booklet:
http://www.roomsaver.com/
Just go there, and enter your location for cheap rates. This last weekend for example, my wife and I ended up near Clinton OK. Hotels.com had all the expensive hotels, with the cheapest being $77 per night. She then used roomsaver.com and found the Econolodge in Clinton for $41. It was not even listed on any of the other sites. You don't even "book" it, you just get the rate and use it as the "walk in rate". Their standard "walk in rate" was $58. Some places have wanted us to "print off the coupon", so we just use the computer at the hotel to do that. We've been doing this for several years and had great luck getting much cheaper rooms. No, I don't work for them. YMMV, and all other disclaimers apply.
If anyone has any other tips to offer, I'd love to read them. This hobby is expensive enough as it is......
