Chasing in the Future

Nuclear is very green as far as CO2 outputs go (much more so even than wind when you take into account the full lifecycle of manufactur of the plant etc) I believe Canada has substantial uranium deposits which could be exploited to power much of the world for a considerable time and would stop the whole oil war in the middle east from getting further out of control. More research into Nuclear would increase effenciency, and further the technology to make it safer and more compact. Perhaps we'll be seeing a nuclear powered TIV on the plains in 40 years time ;) An elderly Sean Casey bitterly ranting about the fusion powered Red Shoe as it cuts him up on the way to another successful intercept with Reed at the helm...

I laugh at how much attention is paid towards vehicles when it comes to CO2. With Power Plants and commercial buildings being the largest contributors the focus is there. I currently back in school to learn more on those subjects and take my current architecture education and see what 'real' solutions there are. It is interesting to me how many of the politic get it wrong!

Chasing wise there will be impacts, but like a few others have stated, chasers will always adapt. The diehards will always be there, and many will fade, and many new folks will try it. Of course the key is not to worry about everyone else, but just worry/plan for yourself.

Yes, Nuclear is a good way to go since there are no air emissions except water vapor. Burying the waste is a whole lot better than emitting it in the air. When you burn fuel oil you get 5 main pollutants - SO2 (sulfur dioxide), NOx (nitrogen oxides), VOCs (volatile organic compounds), CO (carbon monoxide) and CO2 (carbon dioxide). Interesting how only the latter is in the press these days. VOCs react with NOx at low levels in the atomsphere to produce O3 (ozone) which is a respiratory irritant. Way up there O3 is good but not down at the ground level. In 1992, 850,000 tons of SO2 were emitted from just power plants and sugar mills in the State of Florida alone. So there's a whole lot of other stuff going into the air we breath and plenty of it. Wonder what all that other stuff does to our air.

The problem is we don't have the means to store electricty on a large scale. You have to be producing it to use it. The sun doesn't shine all the time and the wind comes and goes. So those technologies have to be backed up with fossil burning plants or nuclear. Well, I did see on TV a place in Europe that was burning wood chips for electricity the other day but now you're whacking down the forest that takes in CO2 and produces O2. In my opinion, nuclear is definitely the lessor of the two evils and I think folks are finally starting to realize it in Washington. I know one thing though, when a hurricane turns off the power for 2 weeks along the Gulf Coast people are screaming! Nuclear power is safe already and the plants are built solid. The Turkey Point facility south of Miami withstood a Cagegory 5 hurricane in 1992.

What we really need are those massive batteries I believe Dupont or GE is working on to store lightning. I'll have to dig that up.

Having to cut CO2 emissions that much will likely mean the end of the Alsups burrito. :(
Or - it could change the way to acquire more methane!

Disassociating water with solar power and then using it to power steam turbine engines for torque - is a possibility.
That is - if the patent holders can be forced to give them up.
When Bigfoot is found.
Just kidding around...

Seriously; when business can realize profit in other sources of energy; they will only go there if they hold the all of the cards - first...
;)

Sam you suck ;) I had to beat my head on the wall for 5 minutes to get that horrible video out of my head. My 6 month old thought it was interesting and was smacking her hands on the table. I just wanted to dig my eyeballs out.

Come to think of it maybe she was really wanting to bang her head on the table and used her hands instead. Whoa BRB she's trying to put a plastic bag over her head. :o
