This may be common knowledge, but can anyone attend Chasercon? Or do you have to have an invite? And is it always held in Denver, CO?

Thanks!

The only thing I know about Chasercon is that I would have attended a few months ago if they hadn't held the conference over Valentine's Day weekend. I want to live to chase next year, and spending a V-Day away from home is considerably more dangerous than any "bear's cage" I have been in.

It's pretty much always been in Denver, but Roger and Caryn Hill were soliciting feedback for a change in venue and location. This year's Chasercon was a special one due to the loss of one of its founders as I'm sure you're aware, and it sounds like they're thinking about making some changes for future events. I haven't heard anything for certain though.

Unfortunately it seems to always be near Valentine's Day - although I think it is usually President's Day Weekend that is chosen, but I'm not positive about that.

Even if Valentine's Day is on a weekday, it can be hard to get away on the weekend before or after, because usually we'll go out to dinner on the closest weekend to Valentine's Day rather than have to get a babysitter and stay out late on a weeknight...

Wish the Hills would change this timing, some of us are lucky enough to be able to leave home for a chase vacation without having to worry about getting to Chasercon anywhere near Valentine's Day! :)

I'm thinking of going for the first time in '15 and would definitely support a change of location. My concern is the potential for travel hangups in and around Denver due to wintery weather in the middle of winter.
Could we consider a snow-free area, such as Houston, Florida or other similar places?

In a dream scenario, the event would move around the country year to year, to give everyone an equally-realistic shot at attending at least one in their lifetime. And not just 2-3 different spots, but rather more of a "US Tour" like the Severe Local Storm Conference has for years. I'd be happy to get DFW as a host once every 8-10 years if I knew I'd at least get that one local opportunity. Have it on the west coast one year, east coast the next, DFW, Chicago, Florida, etc etc and of course Denver. A lot of people can't afford to go every year anyway, and this would give people all over the country a shot at less of a drive. For those who are willing to fly, the point is moot.

Then it could truly be the "national" storm chaser conference, instead of just the Colorado one.

It would be fitting if the con were held in the state with the most tornadoes in the prior year. Nebraska would currently win with a total of 86. If the season were to end today it would be the 1st time Nebraska lead the nation in tornadoes. Last year Illinois would have won.

If they did that, they're would only be a handful of to choose from. I would love to go to one, but the trip will cost like $400 per person. And I'm paying for 2. I think of it as money I could use to chase instead of spending a weekend in Denver. It will always outweigh the chances to chase, and I will never be able to afford that trip.

I heard that for this year's convention if you've never seen a tornado, you have to sit in the back of the room and you don't get the t-shirt.

I think they should split the room between those who thought they saw what might have been a tornado, and those actually saw a tornado and had no doubt.

I think they should make it to if you didn't see one last year, you aren't allowed inside.

I would be the one of the guys with the nose pressed on the door looking in.

Sean, I've got to admit, I'd be out there with ya! It's my first year actually driving substantial miles to chase and I'll tell ya (like I'm sure most of you already know), it punches you pretty hard in the stomach to be 10 minutes behind a tornado event like Pilger, NE and then 5 min behind the Burwell, NE tornado on the same darn day!! Just missing them, when your first instinct was to go, and then you hesitate, and then miss them entirely just sucks...

My only spot this year was the Beaver Crossing, NE tornado. It wasn't till after I looked at my photos and video that I even realized that there was a tornado in that giant wall of HP doom. So I feel your pain.
