Renting Lenses

I was thinking of just renting a few lenses over time and see what I really like. Any one here have any experience doing this? I'm not sure if it was this forum or another but if anyone has any recommendations for where to rent, please tell.

I rented from http://www.cameralensrentals.com and it could not have been a better experience. Barry at CLR was a pleasure to deal with. When he couldn't have the lens for me on the day promised, he let me rent a second lens for free...just because I had to wait an extra day for the orig lens rental. Fantastic.

Mike, get your 17-40 calibrated. I used a couple 17-40's that were noticibly better than my calibrated (and compared to some other folks 10-22s as well) 10-22 in all respects, including sharpness.

I have only heard great things about renting from CLR as well.

I own both the canons, and the 10-22 is on my camera 99% of the time when chasing. I now only use the 17-40L if I'm trying to shoot close lightning, and even then I'm tempted to use the 10-22 for super close bolt shots. Far off lightning doesn't thrill me much for some reason. I could likely live without my 17-40, but not the 10-22. It's just really impossible to be too close for structure when you are at 10mm. So if you like structure and want to be in closer for any tornadoes, you're rather set. To get the same view with 17mm you have to drive a few miles east each time. The 10-22 is a hair sharper than my 17-40L too, but my 17-40L is a pretty sharp copy. I'd say the 10-22 clearly beats it in contrast though.

Mike,

Thanks much for your knowledge. I've seen your photography and even though I'm sure you've heard it a lot, I think your work is absolutely stunning. Knowing that gives me more reason to trust your opinion. (Of course it's the photographer, not the camera, that makes the shot.) Considering your favoritism towards the 10-22mm, I think I'm leaning in that direction. I think I can survive with the kit lens range a bit longer. The only thing that stands in my way is the full frame potential, but being in college, I doubt I'm gonna reach that. Do you have any other suggestions, tips, hints, for the XT/lenses? Thanks again.

I'd also like to throw in my opinion for the Canon 10-22. It's the best lens I've ever used. It's actually what's preventing me from upgrading to a pro body; the 10-22 will only work on non-fullframe bodies. It's the most wonderful lens for storm photography, in my opinion. Once you use it, you'll never want to go back to something less wide. :)

Thanks for all the info folks. Very helpful stuff.
Gene, im mostly going to use the 18-55 with IS in the "heated" storm chasing role. The 55-250 will just be a all around zoom. End up using it mostly around for other things or sitting out in the middle of a field on a tripod shooting some long-range weather. Hopefully I can be close enough to a storm to NOT have to use the zoom lens except for when she's coming in on my target area.Nick
Nick, if your still watching this threat I wanted to add that I saw some beautiful shots taken with the Canon EF 55-250 IS. Hope you post some when your get yours. I almost bought one, seems like a bargin for the price and Canon has very few of those. In the end I used the instant rebate to jump on a EF 70-200 F4 IS....it should arrive tomorrow from B&H.

One side note....you folks that say your Canon lens is not sharp, make sure and check carefully that it's not the focus. That can be an issue with some EF lenses.
