Canon 7D Opinions

A price for a 10k shot used 7D should go for more like $800-$900 MAXIMUM. I don't even see a USED 7D with hardly any use or even NIB USED for more than $1000 INCLUDING SHIPPING. I know folks are asking that much...but I highly doubt they are paying that much...if they are...well, I feel sorry.

Jason,

I agree with Scott. I watch used Canon 7Ds sell all the time for $1,200+. I've never seen one sell for $800-$900, unless it was beat to death. It's not to say that an extreme deal won't pop up from time to time, but generally speaking, this camera sells for a lot more.

If the rebate does surface, used prices will readjust accordingly. But for anyone thinking about buying a new 7D, you may want to act quickly if the rebate is introduced...it's not uncommon for retailers to bump thier prices up after a rebate is announced.

Which is illegal within a short amount of time. Furniture and retail stores try to pull this all the time. I've called them out on it actually, via a call to my local consumer affairs department. I would think places like B&H wouldn't try to pull this with four days left before the rebate.

As far as the prices, I'm mostly going by what other areas and prices are, it is quite possible (as stated) that people are stupid and pay way too much for a used item. I won't. I know what a fair value is. I pretty much made clear what a used 7D SHOULD be selling at for me to purchase. If someone is getting more...great for them, free market FTW. I'm on the buying side now...so I just know what I'm willing to pay. If anything, since I don't plan on holding onto the 7D very long at all....it'll be in my favor on the selling end in a few months when I flip ownership.

I called Canon a couple days ago about my wife's broken A85 point 'n shoot in light of the loyalty program. At that time, the factory-refurbished Canon 7D was available for ~$1080 (+tax but with free shipping), but the 5D Mk II was not available. It also looks like the 50D is now available for only $602 (+tax) according to someone on DPR who bought it today. So, if you're looking for a 7D, I'd ring up Canon to inquire.

I think I'm just about decided on getting a 60D (an upgrade from my old 20D that I've had since Dec. 2004), since it can be had new on Amazon for $888. It appears to be too new to be available through the loyalty program, unfortunately.

Not bad, but they were charging tax? In my state...that's not too bad (6%), but I don't pay any via B&H.

Arrrggg...the 20th can't come fast enough...I want to order my camera. I'm going to feel like an idiot if the discount doesn't happen, but the source is very reliable apparently.

I didn't post the link before, here it is (actually many rebates listed):

The rebates are up now but all camera sites have also raised the prices so the price is basically the same. :-(

How do you get into the loyalty program for Canon?

BTW the price dropped to $1200

Jason,

Time to pick up the phone and call your local consumer affairs department...

I’ve looked at video of the 7D’s video quality and I like it. I’m thinking I may sell my Sony HDR-XR150 and just use the 7D for both photos and video.

The 7D, by most accounts, is the best Canon crop sensor camera available. I just purchased a factory refurbished 7D with a 90 day warranty for $1100 through the Canon Customer Loyalty Program.

The low noise at higher ISOs is fantastic - not as good as the 5D MKII, but as good as you will get in a crop sensor. It's everything I hoped it would be and more; I highly recommend it.

I'm sorry but it is not the best crop sensor body that canon sells, the 1dmk IV is the best. This will be my first chase season using the 1d mkIV and I will post pictures as soon as a storm pops up.

My last camera was the 50d and I loved it too. Never used the 7d though

True, the 1d mk IV is a crop, but it is an APH (5.18 cm) sensor, vs the APC (3.32 cm) sensor of the 7d. They're not really in the same league, as the 1d series more of a sports shooters cam with it's 10 fps shooting. I think most people, when they talk crop, are talking about the smaller sensors found in the mid range DSLRs.

Here's a rough comparison from dpreview, from what I would think is important for chasing:

7d: 1080p video, APC Sensor, 5184 x 3456 resolution, 1.6 crop (i.e. using sharper parts of most lenses), $1200
1d mk4: 1080p video, APH Sensor, 4896 x 3264 resolution, 1.3 crop, $5000

Best is pretty subjective. ;-)

I don't know many chasers shelling out $4500 for a DSLR. My point stands.

My personal interest is in film...only 30% weather and chase related stuff. Film wise the 7D is superior to the 1Dm4, but obviously the 5Dm2 is tops right now until one is ready to keep going into RED territory.
