I know someone selling a Canon 7D which was bought last April and has about 10k shot on it. She is selling the body/box/cables/etc. for $1300. She also is selling a Tonkina 11-16mm 2.8 for $550.

What are your thoughts on this camera as far as price, chase durability and low light performance? The Lens worth a add as well?

This is a big jump for me from Nikon.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT - USA model

$550 for the Tokina is a good price. Regularly see them go for 575-600 with all acessories (box, hood, papers, etc).

$1,300 for the 7D is on the middle/higher end, especially with 10k clicks. Regularly see them go for $1,240-1325 for a used one (without a grip) in very good condition. I've seen folks post some amazing high ISO results from this body. The 7D is logical upgrade for anyone going from a xxD body and not going full frame. Amazing camera with an immense feature set.

The 7D, by most accounts, is the best Canon crop sensor camera available. I just purchased a factory refurbished 7D with a 90 day warranty for $1100 through the Canon Customer Loyalty Program.

The low noise at higher ISOs is fantastic - not as good as the 5D MKII, but as good as you will get in a crop sensor. It's everything I hoped it would be and more; I highly recommend it.

As others have said, the Canon 7D is a fantastic camera. If you can't talk your friend down in price, rumor has it that Canon will offer a $200 rebate on the 7D starting Feb 20th. If prices hold, this would get you a brand new one for around $1,350. (Prices sometime go up once rebates are offered.)

I did the same thing as Scott a couple months ago $1100 thru the canon loyalty program. Couldnt be happier with the price or the camera itself. great upgrade from my XTI.

Another vote for the Loyalty Program! I actually bought a 5d mk2 this way for $1800 (no longer in the program)(. As far as I can tell, it's brand new. I've seen many people take advantage of this program, and I've only heard positive things about it. I'd definitely go for the refurb for $1100!

That's a high price considering Canon is rumored to have a $200 coupon coming out on the 7D Feb. 20th (see Canon Rumors forum). Which would knock the NEW price down to $1,279 (at bhphoto.com). That's LESS than the used price.

A price for a 10k shot used 7D should go for more like $800-$900 MAXIMUM. I don't even see a USED 7D with hardly any use or even NIB USED for more than $1000 INCLUDING SHIPPING. I know folks are asking that much...but I highly doubt they are paying that much...if they are...well, I feel sorry.

Consider that when buying used...you no longer have the warranty (unless someone bought an extended transferable warranty). When buying used....you may not know the source of the camera. I can't tell you how many are 'stolen' when you buy from some sources like craigslist, ebay, even used on Amazon from lower volume or other 'suspicious' sellers.

Scott: how long ago did you get the 7D from the loyalty program? James gave me the heads up on that a few weeks (a month?) ago and neither (7D or 5Dm2) was on program anymore.

As far as performance. Everything I've read and researched says the 7D is the best camera you are going to get for the money. Nikons are loosing the battle right now. Much of the film industry is also entering into the HDSLR market for some of their shots. The recent movie Black Swan (N.Portman & M.Kounis) used the 7D for some shots of the movie. You can also check out vimeo and search "7D" to see what the camera can do (with the right lenses). If you are like me, someone to look to make money but is struggling to get the funds going, than the 7D is a much more practical starting point. Once you've made the money, step up to the 5Dm2 and sell off the 7D (or keep it for another camera platform.

Just remember, no matter what you buy, you have to have tons of extra stuff. Both HDSLRs really should be operated with at least (2) batteries [=$60], (2) 16gb EXTREME (60m/s rate min. I think)[=$125ea], a microphone[~$150min.], flash, filters[$80+], rain hoods, remote release[$100+], etc., etc. Probably another $500 - $1000 to have a decent running platform and workflow. Don't forget about your computing power and editing platform. That could be a few hundred extra too (or more if you have to buy a new, more powerful machine).

The 7D and 5Dm2 seem to come and go from the loyalty program. This seems to be tied to them having any refurbs in stock. I know I saw the 7d come and go several times as I was saving for buying mine. Give it a week or so and Im sure it will be back

Yeah, it's kind of iffy when it comes and goes. I literally think they yanked it right after I ordered mine, as several sites mentioned that it was no longer available. It took me about 1 week of checking periodically to finally get one showing up on the website. When I called in, the very kind lady immediately put a hold on it, as she said there were several other people in queue already to purchase it. I really think mine is brand new, as there were no marks on it, and the actuations were very low.

This is true, although I think you can get a lot better prices than you quote if you check around. I follow slickdeals.net, and stuff for photography goes on sale all the time (it's how I found out about the 5d mk2).

I went from shooting from a 30D to the 5d mk2. What I found out almost immediately is that my lenses suck on full frame. With my crop, they were nice and sharp. Now, all of my edges are soft, I have lots of vignetting and the overall resolving power is weak. If I were again moving from a crop to a full frame, I'd recommend getting a nice sharp lens before anything else. Something like the 17-40 or 16-35. After that, I'd first get a ultra thin polarizer, 2 16 Gb cards (don't need the fastest here, even for HD video), a standard remote and then an extra battery.

I have yet to see a used 7D on ebay go for less than $1200.
