Dear Storm Chaser,

My name is Herbert Castro and I am part of a team of filmmakers producing a grassroots Global Media Project. I would love for storm chasers to participate in this project. The project is called "One Day on Earth". Below are some details.

One Day on Earth will include the participation of documentary filmmakers, students and inspired citizens recording a human experience in EVERY country in the world during the 24 hour period of October 10th, 2010. We currently have participants in over 150+ countries. Our goal is to create platform for the global community to gain a greater understanding of the common threads that connect us and also the differences that make us all unique. There are also big issues being addressed and shared, which will hopefully raise awareness to things that don't make headlines. By participating in this historic event, you will help capture the diversity of life and culture on this planet. Together we will create a document that is a gift to the world.

This project has the support of non-profit foundations and citizens in every corner of the globe; all looking to share their unique perspective. The first step in getting involved would be to "sign up" at www.onedayonearth.org

As our shoot date approaches, we will be providing instructions on how to submit your videos. We will be downloading all submissions and forming an extensive library of international footage. We will be using only that library of footage to edit a 120 minute documentary to be released theatrically.

What's your budget? Most chasers charge anywhere between $30/100 per second for their footage. Enlightening us on where you're at as far as available expenses might help expedite the process.

Could just link them to storm track for a day. I bet October 10th will be a boring storm day. Guess I could shoot video of my cats and submit that. The one stares at me with her eyes open from my computer while she sleeps.

I think this sounds like fun. Probably no storms in my area but maybe I'll shoot some people shots in Richmond along the river. October is a pretty time in Richmond thought the best leaf color is farther north. Cost to me would be nil as I'll take the video camera along with whatever I am doing that day. I had forgotten about the similar YouTube project until after it happened.

WOW...really kind of hard to believe that anyone would be interested in participating knowing that there will be no finacial gain and you give up all rights to said video, weather or otherwise.

Not sure if it is true or not but via the Drudge report the "little" project on youtube
brought in over $500,000 in revenue via adds and sales. Wonder just how many people who helped with that project saw any kind of a return?

Herbert, I am just curious as to what is actually going to be done with all the video? I mean I understand that you will be making a 120min "film"? But what then? Where would it be seen? Networks? Can you please explain more?

I think more people might be interested if they knew more about the project. Where exactly will the profits be going, for example? Are they going to charity? Are they going to line the pockets of some film group? Don't get me wrong, it does sound interesting.

Too many people are willing to give their videos away for free nowadays, just because they want to be a part of the project..

That's the nature of the business. Give everyone a camera, and they're a photographer. Give everyone a video camera (i.e. cell phones), and they're journalists. Give everyone access to SPC + model data + StormTrack, and they're a chaser. I personally like to see this sort of progression. If you're not making any money because other people are undercutting your prices, you need to find a new business model... just look at what ChaserTV did. In the face of declining prices, they came up with a sustainable business model.

From reading through the website and listening to some interviews, it sounds like there won't be any payment for video sent in. The ultimate goal is to release a feature film to be shown in theaters. I did not find any mention of proceeds going to charity, although the project aims to "bring awareness to causes" and has several alliances with like-minded organizations. Free publicity is the only charitable output that I've seen mention of.

The director of this effort is Kyle Ruddick, who also heads up Eyestorm Productions - a company that does for-profit game trailers, documentaries, and other multimedia work.

The chasers that get amazing footage usually rely on that as a source of income, but many would not have a problem donating footage to a worthy cause. A "call to all storm chasers" would probably carry more weight if there were more details around the plans for this feature film and how it actually provides charity.

You may not be making any money off of this, but if there is any charity involved, couldnt those that have a business selling video, and claim income and pay taxes, claim this as a donation? Make up your own value of what you contribute and you got a tax write off?

Doug Raflik

Unless you're giving money to a charity, it's hard to write off donations. I give a few churches / church camps my First2Warn system for free and the IRS said that I can't write off a penny.

No, I am not interested in giving you or anyone else my hard-earned footage. Now, if you are interested in purchasing my footage, then we can discuss licensing fees via pm.

Amen to that! I'm sure most of us feel that way.
