I would be very skeptical purchasing a unibody like the new Equinox, etc. They have taken away from what an SUV truely is.. A truck on a Sport utility body. If you get into a decent accident, your ride is toast. I personally will never purchase a unibody and I'm disappointed to see that Ford is taking away the body-on-frame design of the Explorer this year. Looks like I'll be sticking with Chevrolet for now. They at least realize the importance of the B-O-F by sticking with the Tahoe and Suburban. Others such as the Xterra, Pilot and other foreign models have the right idea. Its to each their own. Everyone has their own personal likings.

LMAO! I'd love to have one of those, Hummer knock off or not. I could make the argument that Hummer copied the Jeep and added two doors, but I know what that will get me.

I'd have to agree...I'd much love the 4 door over the 2 door, especially if you compare it to older models. The more stable, better handling wheelbase for one is much better suited for chasing duty. Yes, it'll suck for rock crawling, but who does that while chasing.
As far as the unibody comment. I'd go check out IIHS and see about how good any of those body on frame vehicles due versus unibody with the latest crash worthy techniques built-in. Sure a Ford Excursion is going to do better than a Honda CRV (random choice to demonstrate size), but compare equal sized and types of vehicles, you'll find a bit of the opposite of what you would think.

When we bought my wifes Xterra, we also considered the 4 door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and HUMMER H3. In my opinion, all 3 are outstanding with their own strengths and weaknesses. I like the fact that all 3 are serious off roaders. Obviously, the Jeep is the king of that catagory out of these 3, especially if you get the Rubicon. But, I'm honestly never going to be rock crawling at Moab. I just don't think I'll ever put myself into a position where it is beyond the capability of the Xterra 4x4 (since we do run true All Terrain tires). Since this is my wifes vehicle for daily use, the fact that the HUMMER had OnStar was a REALLY big deal to me. Automatic crash response. A guy I know had a terrible wreck in his Pontiac Solstice on a mountain road and nobody could get a cell signal to call 911. What they didn't know was, OnStar had already received the signal of the crash, and had help on the way. The cars built in cellular system has a stronger output signal than your hand held cell phone and was able to get thru.
In the end, we didn't buy the HUMMER because GM announced they were trying to sell the HUMMER brand to either the Chinese or an Arab investment group. Hell no. Those deals both fell thru in the end, but by then, we had bought the Xterra.
The Jeep just plain kicks butt. We both love it, but worried it might have been just a little too much for her to live with every day. Kind of like a Corvette vs a Viper. The Viper kicks butt, but can be pretty brutal to live with every day. The Corvette kicks butt too, and is easier to live with!
The Xterra has 265hp, and a 5 speed automatic. We can tow 5,000 pounds, and its been a good truck.
Again, I think any of these 3 are killer trucks....

I was looking at a HUMMER this season but they didnt want to deal so I went with this. This has been the best chase car for us and I`m glad I didn`t buy the Hummer.

I will say, the amount of money spent on purchasing chase vehicles over the past decade has significantly increased. When I started in the late 90s almost no one had a new or newer chase vehicle, or spent more than $10,000 for a chase vehicle.

Well of course any chase car looks better with a storm in the background! Seriously, though, I love my Chevy Traverse! Lots of room, comfortable seats, AWD, and gets around 21 mpg on the highway despite its large size. Other things also factored in to my decision to get this car - able to get through difficult winter conditions (cuz I'm also a skier), room for extended family (now that I'm a grandparent), space to haul stuff to art shows, etc. And maybe it's old fashioned, but I like buying American. But regardless of other considerations, it has worked out very well as a chase vehicle the past couple seasons.

We really like it over our last chase car (The Pathfinder) The on and off road handeling is out of this world as it has had a ton of work done to the suspension. The ride is just unreal and cornering is like a sports car. I always look forward to getting on a chase with the new car unlike the old Pathfinder. The wind would blow the Pathfinder all over the road.
Funny thing is the gas millage is almost the same...lol We drove both of em at the same time, same amount of miles and the Tahoe (V-8) used 1.5 gallon of gas more then the Pathfinder (V-6) did in 250 miles.
