  • After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

Best low-end camcorders

With my current budget, I need something even cheaper than what you are talking about. I have probably AT MOST 400 dollars to spend on a video camera. I know it's going to be a shít camera, but I need the best of the shít. Any help is appreciated.

I've been eyeing an even lower-end model, the JVC GR-D350. It's got a 32x zoom and the "shake correction". It's right at $300, but I have yet to determine a lux level.

Our SKYWARN presenter (Hector Guerrero) said he caught a funnel at night with a low-lux camcorder.

I bought my Sony TRV-19 for right around $400 new in March of 2004. I guess if you only had $400 to spend those cheaper Sony's like that one could work. I'd stay away from Canon in that range.

I finally made up my mind yesterday and got the Sony HC1. My low end idea finally went out the window with the desire to have something in HDV format.

If your in the $200.00 to $400.00 I would recomend the sony dcr trv18, trv20, trv25 or trv27. You can buy these used on ebay for a couple hundred. They are bullet proof, have HAD for lowlight and lets you transfer mpegs from the mini dv tape to a memory stck for easy loading of videos to the web.

Hey Mike, i also bit the bullet and picked up a HC-1. It wont be going on my dash mount yet, I will use my trv25 for that, but it will be my out of the truck tripoded camera, atleast until the new wears off.

The above cameras are not built new anymore, but you can find them used in mint condition. There is a dcr-trv18 on ebay right now for $260. with $100.00 worth of extra batteries included.
