AVCHD Footage on a Mac

Hey everyone,

I am looking into getting an AVCHD camera.

Does anybody know how well AVCHD editing in Final Cut works. I know so far that Final Cut Pro 6 (the version I have) will take AVCHD and transcode it into another Apple-based format.

Is there a way to force an import of the true AVCHD video even just to keep in a separate folder. Will it be okay if the data gets transcoded in the process? How much loss quality will there be?

I have Final Cut Studio but have no idea about this. Apple does have a KB that you can search though...
