Another Snopes Tornado

Good detective work there. I suspected that it was not the Scout's storm, since the chasers on it said it looked like a non-tornado producer, while this storm would have had any chaser's undivided attention. I also suspected time-of-day differences, since the setting sun seems to be reflecting off the front of the machine shed and you can see a strip of sunlight from the corner of the shed across the lawn. That would agree with the 9 PM time of exposure.

I did think it had to be a recent picture, since no one had ever really seen it before the last couple of days, but like many people I wondered if there was some enhancement and where it was actually taken.

I have to ask about the big "notch" in the left side of the meso/wall cloud/whatever that is. That looked unnatural to me. Anybody have any explanations for it?

I did figure the pic was probably legit, since if one was going to photoshop such a thing the grain elevator apparatus would be a nightmare to mask around in the background. A faker would probably choose an easier way to do it.

Yes, I would much rather believe the KIMT website in which it lists a name, etc. on the photo. That storm was isolated and I have seen a few others that shown that storm having some impressive structure. I got the email trying to pass it off as the Little Sioux storm the day after, in which I've already responded that it is not and to continue forwarding that message around...

Can't believe it made the rounds that fast!

LOL, yeah thats a friend of mine Steve's footage. Anyway, not too sure why we are even talking about this still...pretty sure the link I provided was the original place the picture was sent and gives a name and anything else you need. Im pretty sure the case is solved here.

I saw this picture on a news webpage - could have been KETV.com and they had a correction up saying it wasn't what they had said it was originally, ie the little sioux tornado and not the Orchard storm! I can't find the link now though...

I have a feeling this is the new 'Katrina' picture its getting everywhere

I don't think the picture is fake but, I don't think it's a tornado either. If I had to guess, I would say it's just the cold dome of air under the supercell, which has caused the water in the air to condensate in this case.

What do you guys think?

The picture has been proven to be an image taken by a local in Orchard, IA on June 10, 2008. The storm was an isolated supercell that developed along the edge of weak warm front in northern Iowa. The storm was first severe warned, but then also tornado warned as it showed a very nice lowered wall cloud with broad rotation. The storm never produced a tornado, and to my knowledge never had anything more than good sized hail and a broad rotating wall cloud with the usual scud along its' edges.

Did some one contact the seller in the above link to ebay....the title of the photo they are selling has now changed (Little Sioux to Orchard)?!

I have to wonder if the person selling it on ebay even has the rights to do so, or if they are just going to take a crappy internet copy and print it off as an 8x10.

It was mailed to me FOUR TIMES today ... yes, four times in one day...And I'm just not even going to respond to these emails anymore

My mom forwarded an e-mail that purported to show smoke rings being expelled from Mount Saint Helens. Actually they were lenticular clouds. One was above Mount Rainier and one from above Mount Fuji...

OK, it's an awesome pic... But I'm confused, the video clearly says the storm was from a backyard chase on June 8, but the picture that started all this was supposed to have been taken on the 10th, per the AP info. Are you sure these are really the same storm? Has one of them been dated incorrectly? I agree the video looks very similar to the picture, but the different date make me wonder...

Edit: never mind, on reviewing the video I see it says at the beginning that it is indeed June 10th, I guess the caption on youtube is just wrong.
