A super-typhoon Tip for the Atlantic

Of all of the tropical cyclones in the 20th century, my personal favorite is STY Tip of the 1979 season. A TC with a minimun central pressure of 870mb and a diameter of 1,300nm. Wow. If superimposed over the US it would cover the entire western half.

My biggest question is would a storm of this magnitude be possible in the Atlantic basin. Or is it not possible due to the lack of tropical cyclone forming real estate in the Atlantic. Another question would be what is the largest as in size of an Atlantic tropical cyclone.
