A Rare Lightning Event in Denver

Major storms rolled through Denver overnight late last week bringing one of the best shows in quite some time. Many long-time residents said this was one of the biggest overnight storms they'd witnessed in many years. I am certainly not going to disagree with that one as I was out chasing this thing for over 3 hours finally rolling back to my apartment shortly before 3am.

This came during a break from an ongoing project I am working on and had been back in Colorado a couple days after shooting in Arizona. The crew and I had chased eastern Colorado earlier in the day and had finished dinner when the first round erupted around 11pm with a storm just east of downtown.

The first shot was many years in the making as I've had this spot picked out for a couple years as I've always hoped to get the downtown skyline in the foreground of a lightning shot. Fortunately, I was rewarded for my patience as I nailed several good shots.

I have waited years for a shot like this! And while I think this was the best, I took about 6 which looked great with the city in the foreground! I was thrilled! I wish I had a camcorder running during this stint as I was chanting and cheering like I had just scored the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl!

I came home afterwards to get those images pulled from my camera when I looked on radar to see an impressive line of storms moving in from the west. I activated our lightning net with a "it's Christmas time" message and ran up to Arvada to get set up at the Red Rocks Arvada campus. Unfortunately I was having a tough time getting any great shots due to the insane amounts of rain coming down.

Round 3 came when I ditched the rain for a clearer southern vantage point and snapped away even more shots!

I have posted more on my blog and you can check them out here. I have nearly 2-dozen shots from that night, including more of the downtown skyline setting which I am hoping to post later in the week. I'll come and amend this post as soon as I do. In the meantime, I have about half a dozen on the blog with more on the way!

An FYI for those who may be curious; the project I am working on limits the amount of information I can publish or release, including media and/or my wherabouts. However, this night's event was "off-the-clock" persay, and thus I can post my ventures in detail here as it was unrelated to the project I am working on. I am slated to be done with this in mid-September and will return to my normal barrage of useless posts. Until then, bare with me and keep watching for flukes like last night! Wowza!

Great shots Tony! I know when I was out in Denver I was just hoping there would be some thunderstorms or lightning. I would love to get shots of a downtown with lightning and you've done a great job with it!

Tony, I gotta say man, that is one sweet collection of zappers there :), nice catch buddy :)

We've only had 1 lousy thunderstorm here in my area this year so far, and it sucks, as it was a dautime storm, with not much lightning in it at all :)

Hopefuly something decent will come up before the year is out :)

Growing up in Texas, I came to love the the light and noise show of a good late night MCS. Since moving to Colorado, I've really come to miss those. So, this event was a real treat, even if it did rouse me from my sleep.

It's funny... I didn't even think to check radar before calling it a night. That should tell you how unusual late night thunderstorms are along the Front Range. Caught me completely by surprise.

Same here. Had no idea it was coming until it woke me up just before 1. It was crazy on the north side of town here. It was definitely the most intenste overnight lightning storm I can recall in my 6yrs here. Lots of sleepy people at work the next day that had their slumber interrupted.
