8/4/10 DISC: IL/IN/OH/PA/VA/WV/NC

Pretty impressive derecho. It actually originated last night out near Omaha Nebraska. It then tracked through Iowa into northern Illinois, before turning more southeasterly and picking up intensity. It's moving into North Carolina now, and is now over 24hrs old!

Here's a few radar loops of the genesis of this system.

I am in NC now and looks like I will be missed just to my NE by it. It also appears to finally be dying. Ahh well I am looking to see what tomorrow has in store for chase potential.

8/4/10 Reports: IN/OH

Observed a developing mesocyclone from my front porch yesterday... The cell really didn't look like much as it approached from the south, however just as soon as the back end came into view it started to visibly rotate. I saw a short lived mid-level funnel that briefly poked from the cloud base in the direct center of rotation. The storm wasn't severe warned at the time of the funnel, so I called NWS IND to let them know what I was seeing, later the cell's rotation tightened a bit more on radar and went tor warned, however nothing came of it.

Traveled ZERO miles, and all I had to do was walk 5 feet out of my front door! no complaints..

funnel in the center of the image... crappy contrast.
