A severe thunderstorm watch has just been issued for Bergen, Essex and Hudson Counties in Northern New Jersey, as well as a good number of counties in New York state. Storms have been firing up for a good part of the morning around here, and a number of warnings have been issued for strong storms moving through parts of New York City and Long Island. Radar is showing more storms firing up in eastern Pennsylvania. It looks like it's going to be an interesting afternoon...

Looks like at least one supercell crossing Long Island right now... Some other cells are showing signs of rotation too. I had assumed all that early convection in my location (New Haven CT) pretty much hosed the day for potential chase-worthy storms, but you never know...

Edit: Whoa, lots of rotation in that line headed down from NY, several cells showing hooks, albeit small ones. Could get interesting if that trend keeps up...

News 12 New Jersey has reported fatalities due to the severe weather in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. Terrible...my condolences to the families of the victims. My weather radio's alarm has been going off every couple of minutes-and some nasty storms are just south of me, according to the radar.

Radar is showing a line of strong thunderstorms stretching from Maryland, northeast across New Jersey, all the way into Long Island, New York. The most intense cells seem to be cutting across New Jersey right now. Skies are darkening to my southeast, and I just heard a low rumble of thunder.

Line of severe storms is currently moving across wrn MA and CT. Reports of wind damage are starting to come in from swrn MA.

Be interesting to see if those storms can keep their strength. They're moving into an area with better shear but lower cape - much lower along the coast where I am. I'm reasonably confident that line won't look anything like it does now by the time it gets to me.

It does look pretty mean at the moment, tho...

Line looks to be intensifying somewhat across north/central CT. Just got off the phone with my parents who are in nern Hartford cnty. The line will be coming thru there in the next hour and will be hearing from them after it passes.
