Same tornado as Michael's shot above near Chugwater. Storm seemed to tornado as it crossed northwest edge of stratus deck. Very moist but cool upslope air feeding into this storm. It was dropping some major hail on the only east/west road leading up to it. Missed most of the tornado trying to drive away from the huge hail.

Chased the frontal boundary in NC KS and SC NE with my partner Mark W. we ended up on the tornado warned storm near Smith Center KS then followed it east along hwy 36. Initial touchdown of a tornado was near Epson i believe but from our vantage point we couldn't see anything due to rain. Great structure at times, and the a great light show on the way home with wind as well.

Tried to stay close to home by playing a boundary just south of the tornado watch in CO today, but it didn't play out as I had hoped with the cap ultimately winning out. I was only half joking when I posted I wasn't willing to drive to Wyoming to pick up my present, so Mother Nature gave me a cap for Father's Day instead :)

Great shot Michael, and congrats to those who had success in WY and KS tonight!

Chased NC Kansas, storm near Hill City Gusted out quick but surprisingly was able to wrap up later and produce a brief tornado near Norway, KS. Had some nice rotation at times, nearly thought it would put down a big tornado, but just couldn't get it done. Pretty good structure for a while too. First shot is dust getting kicked up east of Stockton. Might post video later.

Went out today looking for hail and that's what I found... but combined with that and a myriad of unfortunate mishaps, we somehow managed to shoot too far east and never saw the tornado behind us. Still, managed some great hail, took a few 2.5" stones in free fall and wind driven at 50mph (new dents on the SIDE of the van), but never lost any windows, and got some great spikey hail. The tornado miss was a sting given whatever reasoning you want to call it, but given the week I had leading up to this, I am pretty numb to missing tornadoes.

Still, a very fun chase to which had the cake without the icing. I knew tornadoes were possible, but was definitely a hail chase for me. With that, a success... just an embarrassing oops with the tornado.

Chased the Rapid City, SD squall line that started as a supercell in northern Custer county. The line basically moved to just east of Rapid City then followed I90. Keloland news station has a story saying a possible tornado hit the Wall, SD airport throwing planes as far as 150yards. I don't doubt it either because several times funnels did pop in and out of wall clouds.

Ryan McGinnis was kind enough to take me along on chases this weekend.
We got in front of the Kansas stuff south of Burr Oak when Ryan noticed a potentially picturesque gust front in the SW. We got in front of it and had fun repositioning and photographing it as it chased us east.

Haven't had time to do much with the photos yet, but here's a sample:

As light was leaving we took shelter in a Washington, KS car wash and let it come over us as a Lincoln radio station (92.9 The Eagle) decided to play "Riding the Storm Out". Good times!

Wow. Great tornado images! I hung around the cells that developed at sunset in NW KS around Colby. A few images....

These CGs were shooting out from the anvil quite a ways downstream of the actual storm core.

Just got some video posted to youtube from this chase.
We chased north central Kansas. Initially storms that developed showed some potential to produce a lower end tornado. They quickly transitioned to more of an HP type updraft with kinks in the line that would try and produce a weak spinup before falling apart. Finally the storms transitioned to more of a squall line as the cold pools started to merge and we got a huge shelf cloud that covered several counties. I think we saw a weak tornado during the second phase of the storms as they took on the more HP elongated updraft type structure with inflow kinks along the line, but I can't confrim that since we were several miles away at the time. I'm about 80% sure it was a weak tornado though.
I put some video together that shows the transition in structure through the afternoon as storms evolved. It was a fun chase even though there were no tornadoes. The storm produced a good whales mouth, which is always cool to see. Here is the link to the video.
