5/31/08: NOW: NY/NJ/PA

Looks like the start of a bow-echo/linear crapola just NE of Elmira, NY. The storms are still discrete and are moving into a favorable area for supercells. There is still a chance for supercells, and maybe, maybe a tornado, if the cells can remain isolated. Otherwise all of this will line out and form a nice bow-echo.

Nasty line of storms is moving into northwestern New Jersey, according to Weather Underground radar. Looks like things could get interesting within the next hour or so.

9:30pm: Event winding down now. Just observed the last severe thunderstorm of the evening for Eastern New York. It occurred along the cold front. Clouds and rain that lasted through 12-1pm really screwed things up. I did manage to catch one Bow Echo severe thunderstorm cluster over New Baltimore, NY (near Hudson, NY) on the NYS Thruway rest stop. There were 40-50mph winds, great CG lightning and for a moment small pea sized hail. I watched what appeared to be a small wall cloud develop on the southern flank but then lost sight of it in the heavy rain and 45mph winds. 5 minutes later a TVS and rotation appeared about 3 miles Southeast of me. No TOR warnings were issued and no visual confirmations of a tornado were received. SO CLOSE!!!
