5/10/10 DISC: OK/TX/KS

Here's what was going on in our subdivision at 10:35 pm this evening.

The neighbors two houses down were burning down the remainder of their house (past the roof seen here, which is a house that was partially damaged and they were pulling people out of Monday):

Meanwhile here in my house it's like another Friday night, with Internet audio on the PS3 from Radio Nigel.

Needless to say the contrast is very disturbing and has been preying on my conscience (not just the differences above but the outcome overall from the tornado damage). I think those people are ok or have some friends, as it sounds like they're drinking and joking around... they chucked a cylinder of propane in the fire about 20 minutes ago, which is the real thing that prompted me to wander outside, as I heard a bone-splitting boom that shook my house. Those people 2 houses down we have never talked to and Shannon and I are trying to figure out what to do to help them. I am wanting to drive over and give them $100 Home Depot gift certificates; my parents think I should just leave it at token gestures of bringing over food or something. The sticking point is of course that we have never talked to them and we're actually moving out of here in June as we're closing on a house elsewhere in Norman. I'll leave it at that, and we're still figuring out what's an appropriate gesture for helping them. Shannon has actually been concerned about me and asked me to look up "survivors guilt". This is definitely a situation of being too close to the fire.

Don't know if this has been posted yet but it appears both the Stanley Draper Lake tornado and the Norman tornado have been given EF-4 ratings.

Yeah that was real interesting two of the tornado got upgraded to an EF4. Those tornadoes looked like they caused damage that was at least EF3 but maybe some of the homes that were flattened along with some buildings was the consideration for a EF4 rating.

Sorry to hear about your neighbors Tim. Nobody can understand what your going through untill we go through it ourselves and I hope I never have to. As much as I want to see a tornado I don't want to see the death and destruction that follows. I am suprised people are wanting another big tornado outbreak already after Norman was just devestated.

Where I live I know all of my neighbors so seeing one of them lose a home would really bother me. They are all good people. I think taking some food and introducing yourself works. Don't let this bother you to much. It happens. Be thankfull your house did not suffer more damage.

I would offer to donate some money to your neighbors but funds are tight for me right now. I hope they find a new place to stay soon.

Take care and stay safe.

I think our neighbors are mostly relatively well off, so probably have good insurance and safety nets. We may donate to help other affected people who aren't as well off, though.

The damage in our neighborhood is part of why one of the tornadoes was changed from EF3 to EF4, I believe. Certainly these were decent frame homes, and several were left nothing but rubble. The most striking thing to me is the tree damage, though. I've seen F4 and F5 damage before, but to see it in our own neighborhood, right next door, is quite a different thing. It feels like we were picked up and dropped into another country.
