[rant]What I find compelling about the fact that people were in the Wakita tornado is the lack of personal responsibility. No one forced anyone to drive underneath the churning meso of an already tornadic storm. After the first slender cone tornado, we made the decision to get just behind the action area so we could watch and drive from behind instead of trying to blast ahead an outrun a storm moving at 50+ mph. We had a very unique view as we watched numerous chasers trying to jockey for position very near the tornado (we were 1/2 to 3/4 miles behind it), with vehicles passing us at a high rate of speed to get closer to it. I have to problem with people wanting to get close safely, but to drive underneath a tornadic meso for position is just insane - regardless of the traffic situation.
It was painfully obvious, even before the "vehicles in tornado" situation that chasers, perhaps many, were going to get plowed over by a tornado as the meso loomed directly over the highway for many minutes as a stream of cars drove under it to get ahead. Traffic or not, stopped vehicles or not; the fact is, each and every one of those chasers made a conscious decision to drive directly underneath a tornadic meso. I mean seriously, it was moving directly over or very near the road for many many minutes and each and every chaser had to to slow down and let it pass or continue to stay ahead depending on where you started when it neared the road.
For the individual chasers, I'm of the opinion that they can do what they want as long as it doesn't affect me now, or down the road. As far as the chase tour is concerned, SHAME ON YOU! Shame on you for putting the lives of guests on the line, you should know better. Traffic is not an excuse for driving directly under a tornadic meso.[/rant]
