20Z DAY ONE

Read somewhere they have a power outage and can't put anything out at the time. The UT MD has been up past expiration as well.

Apparently the SPC has Kevin Martin's "Ontario Weather Service" as backup for when they're non-operational...

yep power outage. i was reading the sioux falls afd, and it mentions the power outage at the spc. no updated outlook, the latest mesoscale discussion is still up from 3.5 hours ago, and the forecast tools are still using the 18Z run of the RUC!! wonder what caused it? maybe it was those damn squirrels again that caused a power outage up here in the omaha area recently!!

There was a data outage yesterday at the SRH when a construction worker in Denton, TX on I-35 cut through a data cable from the SRH office. I think this outage has to do with a power outage at the NWC, which houses the SPC.

The ADMNFD is a critical product to monitor... RealEMWIN has been sending me these all day:

It hasn't been a fun day.

SPC has been in contact with Scott AFB throughout the afternoon. Power and systems are in the process of coming back right now and operations could return to normal within the next 1-2 hours.

Does National Weather Service in Norman rely on external power? I thought it was self contained or had back-up.

We have backup power, but the backup systems become unstable. As a precautionary measure, systems were shut down and duties relegated to the appropriate backup offices. Once things checked out, systems slowly began to come back online.

They were delayed sometime about a week or so ago. It was a day I chased locally, and remember the products were delayed and it was clear they had an outage. I can't remember the specifics, but it was obvious that power was the issue at the time.

Looks like things are getting back to normal now:

SPC HAS REGAINED FORECAST AND WATCH OPERATIONS FROM SCOTT AFB
OPERATIONAL WEATHER SQUADRON /OWS/ AS OF 0100 UTC/20 AUG AFTER AIR
FORCE FORECASTERS ISSUED AN EXCEPTIONAL FORECAST WATCH EARLIER THIS
EVENING.

hmm...3 weeks ago Ben H Moved to Norman and now works in the national weather center and since then the SPC has gone down twice...I blame him.
