2024 - 2025 Winter Forecast Outlook

I don’t put much faith in any of these seasonal outlooks, but it can be fun to speculate, just like it’s fun to speculate about the upcoming NFL season. I do enjoy big winter storms, and it’s been a while since we’ve had an active winter here in the Philadelphia area, so I’m hoping that Direct Weather map showing “Huge Snowstorms” for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast is correct! 😜

Ever notice no matter what in many of these "forecasts," the DCA-BOS corridor is always in
for it for a cold and snowy winter? This is by design b/c it is most densely populated area of the country. Can you connect the dots here? Let me put it this way, find me any winter forecast over the years that has "mild and little snow" DCA-BOS!

And what does "polar vortex" mean exactly as an individual phenomena for sensible weather at the
surface? I'll tell you, *nothing!" It is merely a buzzword picked up by the MSM to scarce people by using an arcane term not known by the general public, nothing more. Just say "colder than average."

And forecasting climatology is zero practical skill, *anyone* can do that. For instance, pointing out "lake-effect snow" around the Great Lakes. There is absolutely no value or skill in that b/c it *will* happen by default. That's like saying the days will be shorter in the winter than the summer!

Here's a forecast for a milder Boston winter... Winter Weather Outlook: Less Snow, Warmer Than Average WBZ Weather Team Predicts

And here's one calling for milder conditions this winter: Farmers' Almanac winter forecast for 2024-2025: Wet, milder, longer season for much of US

Cutting to the chase from the first article above about Boston, the "projection of winter (December-January-February) ending up 2-3F warmer than average and snowfall in the 15-30" range at Boston's Logan Airport" is a better way to forecast, IMO... than when I see 66 % chance of above or 66% probability below the mean for regional temps / precipitation. The latter probability scheme is little more than a flip of a coin with no scaling.

In early 2023 I started spending about a week per month in Boston for work. I thought that would give me an opportunity to catch some of the countless snowstorms that over the years seem to miss Philadelphia (or just provide rain) and then pound Boston. But so far it has been two winters without much snow up there, hoping 2025 isn’t my third!
