I awoke to a SLGT risk ovaloid positioned over the Central Valley in California. Since this is a rare occurrence, I got in my truck and headed out on I-580 toward Tracy, CA, where convection had set up coming off the Diablo range near Altamont. I punched the core on I-205 where I observed rain rates in excess of 1" per hour. Coming through the other side, I took these photos in Lathrop looking southwest at—what is for central California—an impressive convective complex. At this point I drove back through the core where I observed a few dime-sized hail stones, along with some accumulation of pea-sized hail on the road and rain rates in excess of 1" per hour.

This is pretty much what amounts to mammatus in California.
