A spectacular haboob hit the Phoenix area this evening. Surprised not to see a thread on this, given the extensive media coverage. This is the most spectacular haboob I have ever seen video of in the U.S. - reminds me of some stills I have seen from the Dust Bowl years in the 1930s. Here are some links to some videos:

uggg... we missed the show here in Tucson. The thunderstorm gust front that picked up all that dust started near here. It was windy, with one of the metars just south of town reaching 67 knots. It had just started picking up dust, nothing too special. But I did see a decent number of power flashes. That gust front stayed organized and strong and collected dust all the way up to PHX, and they got the show. A little jealous... although now I know what they look like in our model(WRF did a great job with this thunderstorm cluster), maybe I can be in the right spot next time.
