Lost control and rather than slide around, he took the safe route and got off. It's an older Legacy Outback, very similar to mine (I have a GT); as I keep saying, the AWD system is all that great.

I will leave room for the possibility it was a chaser or someone else making a U-turn...but odd place for it.

No lol it was actually an average joe who didn't want his car destroyed by hail. At that point I had just driven into it and outside the frame he had turned into the other direction of freeway and blazed off in the opposite direction.
