1948-03-20 Tinker AFB tornado

As many of you may know, March 20, 1948 is the date of the first Tinker AFB tornado, which was unforecast and led to the renowned predictions by Miller and Fawbush a week later.

Here is what the surface charts looked like at noon, about 8 hours or so before the tornado hit (chart created with Digital Atmosphere).

One of my projects going on right now is with ancient datasets, so it's awesome seeing charts like this. Not only that, but depicting patterns that we're so familiar with now on a chase day. Definitely looks like a frontal system & major upper-level trough was coming out of the Rockies... and not too different a pattern from 4/10/79 either.
