Nice isolated sell has gone up near Charco, AZ. Currently 69dBZ and intensifying with persistent meso in the rear quadrant. Just went SRV as I type.

Moderators can decide if today warrants a now thread.

Out the door..........!

74dbZ cell over north PHX with TDWR velocities well over 50 kts: http://meteorologicalmusings.blogspot.com/2010/10/severe-thunderstorms-in-phoenix.html

A train echo seems to be trying to form, so there is potential for flash flooding in Maricopa Co. later this afternoon or evening.

3:16pm Central update: Hook echo southeast of Cave Creek. Also report from the storm of considerable wind damage and people "trapped in cars" due to blown over trees in north PHX.

Third time on this post -- aircard is very sporatic outbound. Confirming Mike's radar observation, about 19:25Z a weakly rotating whale's mouth wall cloud passed just west of my location about three miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. The rainfree base area continued to show significant upflow (but little rotational shear as usual for AZ) as it moved briskly NNW toward Cave Creek. Some straight-line damage and local flooding in the area.

About 30 min ago-had a storm pass over to my west between Roosevelt Lake area and SR260-Entire storm had rotation and wall cloud on southern flank-as it passed by wall cloud dissipated and strong rear inflow of cooler dry air came in from southwest. This storm had a tornado Warning on if issued by Flagstaff Office. At this time there is another storm /line of storm heading NNE towards my location, showing increasing Red?green mixing on radar

About ten minutes ago (23:50 GMT) my location just northwest of downtown Phoenix was pounded again with estimated 60+ mph winds and hail. I retrieved and measured a 1.5" hailstone which had melted somewhat. It looks from the radar that the dryline is approaching and we may have one more burst on the way within the hour.

David,

Do you believe the hail is enough to cause roof damage?

Mike

Just got a report from a friend in Phx. Much "ding" damage to cars and home windows shattered. I do not know the extent. As noted, would expect more SVR especially in areas where there is still surface heating.

Looks like storms have pretty much cleared southern AZ for awhile. Mike, I didn't see hail large enough for roof damage; however the wind was of derecho nature and quite strong, and I wouldn't be surprised to see some isolated roof damage and loosened tiles from that. The wind driving 2" hail could certainly account for the damage Warren is reporting.IMO.

Bow echo now moving North from Tucson along with Severe TStorm alert for Pinal and Gila counties--so it looks like another round. Also tomorrow will either be a zero day or another day of storms depending on where that low pressure area goes overnight

I have a terrible camera but you can see the lowered wall cloud and also a double rainbow from the day

And some hail
