10/01/09 REPORTS: OK/KS/MO/TX

Early afternoon a very shallow squall line developed just west of Hwy 75 in Eastern Oklahoma. A few severe warnings were issued before the system left the state. I captured some video (warning not much to look at other than SLC's)

After I looked at video I went and looked at some still pics. The one below actually shows a dust cloud blowing under this SLC.



I hope our fall chase season is not over.

Mods: You may want to include SW Missouri as well.

Chased from SE Kansas into SW Missouri not expecting much as upper "support" was far to the north of the surface-based instability ahead of surging cold front. Managed to catch a few severe storms along the line in Barry County, MO.

I traveled E a ways to over N of Dallas on 82 (great view from the dam of that big Lake up there... can't recall the name right now... sat there a while) with the intention of intercepting the squall line, following it back home shooting lightning... not much lingering precip in the backside. Everything worked according to plan until my truck died about 30 minutes before sundown. Didn't start again until 2 hours later. It had no problem beating me back home... and I got no lightning, just a pretty view of the backside of the storms in the distance. It's done this now on 3 out of five trips... I think there is some sort of electrical connection getting wet as it seems to have died when it was raining, the roads were wet... each time. Very annoying... let it set for a while and it will start. Great to have a truck that won't run when it gets wet....

Edit: Forgot to mention The only tornado warning I saw ended up being issued for a storm that tracked 10 miles or so south of MY HOUSE... while I was watching the stars.

Started the day southwest of Tulsa on I-40. There was a bit more clearing down there. I saw the first tcu around noon and by 1 storms began forming down the line.

I headed S/SE to intercept the southern storm (tower at left above). It remained barely isolated from the line and looked like it maybe had some potential but it soon was engulfed by the line as well.

I stayed just ahead of the storms for a while. The pic below was of a severe storm on the northern part of the line. The line had broken up a bit and this storm was just ahead and separated from the line.

Watched a great storm develop just 10 W of my house and move east. The storm had a wall cloud with weak rotation then became outflow dominant. The core passed right over my house bringing much needed rain. Check out my facebook page for storm pictures. tm

Was at our local WalMart, Burleson, TX. The squall line was forecast to move into our area around 7 p.m. CDT. Moved in two hours sooner, with a brief lowering (wall cloud?) and brief, heavy rain. As the line passed my location, it developed further and provided a spectacular intracloud lightning display to the south. Did manage to capture the lowering (first two images) and a tiny bolt (third image). Mosquitos were bad, so didn't get to take as many pictures as I wanted.
