07/08/2009 NOW: KS/ND/SD

Not sure what Rapid City is doing, perhaps it's in the Indian Reservation and they just don't care, or maybe it's just literally out in the middle of nowhere, but that thing looks insane with 140kts of shear in a tightly wrapped couplet... And no Tornado Warning??

7/08/09 NOW: SD and ND

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 1000 PM MDT
for northeastern Perkins County...

At 921 PM MDT... a severe thunderstorm was reported capable of
producing billiard Ball size hail... and damaging winds in excess of
70 mph. This storm was located near White Butte... moving east at 45
mph.

This is the first time I've heard of "billiard ball" sized hail. This has been quite an evening around the northern plains. Tornadic cell has regained strong rotation east of Dickinson as TOR warnings are in effect. Lemmon is getting whalloped as I type and Bismarck should be under the gun within the hour. Apparently, multiple reports of tornadoes and significant wind damage across the western half ND and SD north of I-90.

Man, now that's a dedicated chaser. Out past midnight chasing a storm completely in the dark. I was on that very road on the 26th last month and I can tell you it is very isolated. It's hard to view velocities on the storm since it's moving perpendicular to the radials on KLNX, but outbounds are still good: up to 70kts at 0.5.

the storms that are in southcentral south dakota are absolutely amazing! at 1145 pm there was a report of 2 tornadoes on the ground just south of mission, sd! tops are over 60k feet and up to baseball sized hail looks possible. the storms that moved through lemmon, sd earlier with baseball sized hail and 80 mph winds have weakened as they continue southeast, and also the line of storms that produced that huge severe tstorm warning box across all of west central north dakota have weakened as well with no current warnings. i am still waiting to see if we get a derecho out of these storms?!

The cells up by Mobridge will be the ones to watch for the derecho possibility. There was a report of 100mph winds in Bennett County, SD at 8:45 mountain time. Ivey did have some great visual on cam of a couple tornadoes earlier in the evening.
