06/04/08 REPORTS: NE/IA/IL

Chased the prolific tornado producer which rambled slowly across SW Iowa. Saw a total of 3 tornadoes, with the best view and most significant one looking down Main St. in Corning (Adams Co. IA) at what looked to be a strong tornado. Damage I saw was mostly EF-1 and EF-2 on the quick damage survey I did after the tornado passed. The width of the damage path was about 1/4 mile wide. Darkness had set in so no stills, but did get some video of it as it passed south of Corning.

Chased E/C Nebraska yesterday and proceeded to shoot myself after watching the Iowa cell take off.

Played with some supercells that would rotate for a while then become outflow-ish. Followed them east until the 'land hurricane' started to develop to our N... tried to head north a bit to get check out an area of apparent area of rotation... but thought better of it as we were about to be munched and wouldn't have been able to see anything given its massive HP nature. Mean, mean looking storm. Flew south and stayed under it before crashing in Lincoln where we were treated to one of the most amazing shows of cloud-to-cloud lightning -- right over head too -- that I've ever seen.

Got to the early middle supercell north of Kearney just in time to see it get under cut by cold outflow. It appeared a cell sort of split off it, but actually seemed cyclonic on radar. That storm seemed to be what really sent that initial outflow surge southward. There was another nicer supercell ne of this one then, but out of reach. Yay for that "show".

Dropped to Holdredge as I thought the one behind it head for Kearney would be screwed if it did not go se on this outflow. Saw it as it was undercut and going north of the ofb.

All that were left were the two beasts in eastern CO, sw NE. I knew they'd crap out by the time I got there, but hell the only other choice was get a motel in Holdredge at 7pm. So west I went. There was no way to get the one north of McCook by the time I reached the city, since it was due north by then, and crossing into the crap air right then too(yay). West of McCook I went, soon watching the last CO storm crap out. I got about 1 county west of McCook before I turned around, well east of the storm. Went to McCook and got a room.

After dark it re-intensified a little, so I went north into the darkness to intercept it. It had a big scoop on the ne side, but I could not beat that north. It cored me with some nice wind driven golf balls. Up to that point, the neatest thing I saw all day was ONE cg off in the distance...lol. Thank god I didn't just stay home and hop on I29 once that sw IA cell fired south of Omaha. That would have been just aweful to have done instead. Or hell wish I would have just gone back east and been in the landcane thing.

Gridley IL Supercell and Tornadoes

Here are some pictures of the storm I caught on the 4th in Central IL.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks.

This storm started with a classic supercell structure.

This is probably my favorite non-tornado pic. That bolt came from the top of the storm and had no branches at all.

This is one of the brief tornadoes.

A pretty rope.
