I think what may have happened is that there were two tornadoes, the old tornado went to the east but a new mesocyclone spun up very quickly around Greensburg, and then spawned a new tornado.

Looking at google maps, Greensburg is just east of the junction of US 54 and 483; the radar just shows a dot at the intersection. So it indeed looks like a violent tornado went right through town.

"GREENSBURG HAS APPEARED TO HAVE TAKEN A DIRECT HIT FROM A VIOLENT TORNADO VIA EMS REPORTS."

This is from the latest severe weather statement from the tornado warning.

Maybe I am seeing things, but it looks like the old meso split off to the east, and a new meso/hook/violent rotation has reformed to the west of Greensburg and it may take another hit. Jeeze. Unbelievable.

Skip Talbot reports witnessing a rope tornado just north of his location (still waiting on him to tell me where exactly that is) and east of the main couplet at 10:55 PM.

I know the NWS reported a direct hit, but KWCH chasers talked to EMS and they said there were houses hit SE of town. Once again, the radar they were showing on TV didn't show a dot for Greensburg. It was zoomed in to street level and showed every little side street in Greensburg. KWCH mets think it missed the town or barely brushed it according to what was said on the air.

EXACTLY RIGHT !!! This is now a CYCLIC cell. The "parent" tornado RFD cut it off at the most unfortunate time and it took a left turn (north) right into the town of Greensburg. The new circulation is now tightening to the NNE of Greensburg. This thing could continue long throughout the night!

Lets try this again shall we...............

I am posting a request from Darin Brunin.

I just hung up the phone with him. He is in Greensburg and reporting huge damage. His words were that the damage path could be up to 2 miles wide. He and Dick McGowan are in the process of rescuing people from their homes. They have said that there are not enough emergency personnel to help out all the victims. Their request is that if anyone is near the town to please stop and help the people. They are reporting dazed and confused people just roaming around. I could hear it in his voice that this is a terrible situation in Greensburg. Those people need help.

Sorry for all the posts on page 8. This thread was whacked out for a while.

I started a NOW thread just for the situation in Kansas in case anyone wants to start fresh in that one. We're already at 10 pages, with many apparently not loading or updating.

MOD NOTE - continue or delete, I'll leave that at your discretion.
