As some of you have been aware, I've been busy lately working on a guide about selling video to the media, and it is now finished. You can find out the details on it here:

Yes! I answered the question about how much to charge!
Yes! I included an entire page of media contacts!

Those are the two questions I get asked most often. This is a great guide if you are new to the business, or always wanted to get in to it. It's basically a 31 page crash course. Don't let the size fool you, it's packed with all info and no fluff!

The price for the guide is going to be $49, but for a VERY LIMITED time I am listing it at $29, so get it while it's cheap!

You can read more about it here:

or buy it direct from Payloadz:

Just out of curiosity, what are the motives behind this? For someone who has made as many video sales as you have, you must know how much this will saturate the market.

The motive is to make money....duh....LOL. David runs a business, and is free to try new things. If it saturates the market...well he's made his money. Free market FTW!

How long the price good for? Will be good for comparison to other sources.

Didn't realize at first it was just a download. Thought there was something tangible like a small book or something. Since I like to review things from time to time, was going to buy one on that premise alone.

If you buy, it available immediately for download, right? (edit...it does say that on the order page...should have checked).

They are supposed to be immediately available, yes. However, right now there seems to be some sort of lag between PayPal getting the payment and Payloadz, the delivery service, getting notice of the payment. As such, I am manually monitoring them and trying to send them via email attachment as well. i.e., you should get it pretty quick.

People giving away all their footage for free moments of fame has saturated the market already. A person may as well make a book on how to try to get some money out of it to try to make up for some of what has been lost to the give-aways. :D

Copyright....put a water mark within it....
Selling....call the media....
Shooting....get a tripod..
Contracts....they won't offer you one..
Pricing....whatever you think it's worth....

That will be 29.95, please. ;)

31 pages at $49.99 = Not worth it.

Free Advice:
Shooting tips- Doom and Destruction Sells!
Prepare your video- iPhone4
Contracts- There's no such thing as a contract
Price- Whatever you want
How to get paid- Small Claims Court
Protect your video- The Enforcer and/or Small Claims Court (They really do work!)

There. Problem solved.

Whether or not it is worth it is relative for each person. I find some of the attitudes in this thread strange. It's appropriately placed in Marketplace as a goods or service targeted towards the board members. You don't have to buy it, if you don't want it. David is a reputable source from what I have seen on here, so it's probably not a scam. It just seems some people don't value others' time and are trying to steer people away from purchasing this, I don't know, it's just weird.

I was just about the post the same thoughts. This is David's ad, and I'm surprised to see some of these posts. This is like going into someone's Marketplace post advertising their season chase highlights DVD and saying "Eh, a lot of the video was shaky, and there's not many tornadoes. Just go watch some YouTube video, and thank me for saving you money." David put his time, effort, and expertise into this -- if you don't see value, then the product probably isn't for you. There are quite a few who are probably interested in this, so I don't see a need to debase a product produced by another respected chaser.

David, I am really glad to see that someone has finally written a book on this subject. (Although I have not yet read the book --- I am assuming the rate quotes are accurate).

I remember years ago, a book (more like a brochure) was written on stock photography prices and it changed the market.

Although I doubt anything will put the genie back into the bottle -- as some photographers / videographers (and the public) will continue to lack the self-confidence or knowledge to charge what their work is worth...

Say NO to giving your pictures / video away for free!

W.
