Well, it looks like the government is going to fund the upgrade to dual-pole, very high resolution doppler radars over the next 5 years. WFLD-TV/DT in Chicago
has one, and it definitely rocks the house. There will be two million-watt dual-pole doppler radars down the street from and in sight of each other at NWS Romeoville (KLOT)!

Firm to upgrade radar systems for U.S. government

Huntsville-based Baron Services Inc., in partnership with L-3 Communications
Corp., has been awarded a five-year, $43 million contract from the National
Weather Service to improve radar systems for three government agencies.
Baron Services will work with New York-based L-3 Communications' Enterprise
Solutions division to upgrade NEXRAD radar to dual polarimetric radar
systems for the Weather Service, Federal Aviation Administration and
Department of Defense. NEXRAD, or Next Generation, is a network of 158
high-resolution Doppler radars operated by the Weather Service.

Baron Services will provide the design, development and production for a
systemwide upgrade for each of the agencies' radar services.

Converting to dual polarization Doppler radar allows users to identify with
greater precision which type of precipitation is falling by sending out
vertical and horizontal pulses, instead of solely horizontal pulses. The
technology enables meteorologists to predict flash floods and winter weather
more precisely than before, the company said.

"We are proud to have been selected as a partner in this program and are
looking forward to working with L-3 Communications," said Bob Baron, Baron
Services president and CEO, in a news release. "Technology that we've
developed for our broadcast customers is now going to be implemented as an
integral part of the government's NEXRAD program."

Baron Services provides a wide range of weather sensing, weather display and
meteorological analysis tools and is the first company to provide a
television product plotting a storm's location, extrapolating its speed and
direction of movement to estimate its time of arrival. The company pioneered
the visual integration of velocity data from multiple radar to calculate and
graphically depict wind shear.

Baron, a former local TV meterologist, started the company in 1990. It has
80 employees in Huntsville and 15 in offices in Florida and North Carolina."
