Does anyone have any recommendations for window cages for hail? I have a 2008 dodge ram 1500 that just got rhino lined but I want to protect the windows just as much as the body! 20171105_011849.jpg

Just search for "hail guards" or similar terms. There are a lot of build threads around here for various vehicles and alternatives to cages as well.

Have you thought about 3M security film? Applying it on the inside and outside of the side window glass will make it pretty hard to break, and will have an appearance no different than your regular windows.

I'll have to look into it!!

Daniel Shaw had his 3M safety film installed at a place in Tulsa, but I can't remember where. Probably either Thermofilms or US Window Film.

His is the 26-layer variety, 0.8mm thickness, and it survived the RFD of the El Reno tornado without breakage.

And you can see totally through it? That sounds like a pretty good deal!

Yes. I've seen this stuff applied to windows of stores and such in high-crime areas. It's very tough, and you can get it on a tint scale from crystal clear to limo black.

Keep in mind that there are different rules in different states regarding how dark your drivers door and passenger seat windows can be. It generally only cost a couple of hundred bucks to have it done and most 3M dealers will install it for you.

The place in Tulsa wanted $875.00. It's clear. I've never seen it stop it from cracking, just stopped stuff from going completely through. But that in itself makes it almost worth it.

If you've Rhino Lined the whole thing I'd imagine you don't mind making other permanent/semi-permanent mods so here's our solution. We used 1/16" thick square steel tubing to build a functional roof rack a debris guard for the front window. The hail shield actually comes off so you can go with just the roof rack while not chasing, or can even completely remove the rack if wanted. We've had 400lbs of people standing on the front of the guard with no problem.

Any admins or mods -

Can we get this thread, the hail guard thread, and the hail guard build help thread all merged?
