• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

Wind Farms: Coming Soon to a WSR-88D Near You

Here are some areas with false reflectivity due to wind farms that I know of.

There is a new Windfarms download on GRLevelXStuff.com that shows the locations of windfarms--including the number of windmills at each farm--across the US. I downloaded it into my Giibson Ridge radar software a couple days ago. Works beautifully.

There's also a forum discussion thread that describes the relevance of windfarms pretty thoroughly.

Also certain electric plants, I think the nuclear ones mostly, show up as high reflectivity under certain conditions. I believe the air has to be somewhat moist for them to show up.

I know that. Thank you, Captain Obvious! :>

Also the heating plant steam cloud here on campus sometimes shows up on radar, if the steam can get up above the beam height.

You can see the Beaumont, KS wind farm on KICT quite often. I read that they are going to work with the electric companies to try and keep the interference to a minimum. I would think that they will figure out some what to write some clutter suppression code that can tell its coming from a wind farm either by the returns or pre programming the location of the wind farm into the 88d software, at least I hope!

But it’s something that’s going to be more and more of an issue, here in Kansas they are throwing up wind farms left and right without one thought of negative effects in general.

Here is a article about wind farms and how they affect the radar products.

Here's an article on how wind farms could affect more than just the radar:

If they really could steer storms, slipping the wind farm operators on duty a little cashola could save some chasers a lot of money for gas, lodging, etc.

Just a thought.....

Snow on Top

I can't tell you how many times I've mis-called initiation because of the wind farm southwest of DDC.

Here in our EOC in Hutchinson, KS, the windfarm at Montezuma, KS (SW of DDC and about 130 miles away from us) shows up on our Baron ThreatNet Plus as a large white circle whenever there is enough snow to sit on top of those things for a while. In December 2006 it was there for almost two weeks.

The wind farm along I-70 in Lincoln and Ellsworth counties in central KS occasionally shows up from KICT. I was amazed when I realized what it was one morning because it's so far from the RDA and I had never seen that wind farm show up before.
