What programs do you edit your video with?

iMovie and final cut express

I use Macs. My older Imac and I have made videos with Imovie. I have loaded extra tools in it and made some DVDs (with iDVD).
However I have been disappointed with it lately .
I have tried Final Cut Express and might get the latest version. Any other Mac people work with FCExpress?

For Mac users, Final cut is the solution, for sure. But I prefer working on PCs and on Premiere

I've used Pinnacle Studio 12 for about six months, and been extremely impressed with it. IMHO it has the easier interface. It's extremely intuitive, and makes splicing and other basic editing a breeze. It also has some nice, clean rendering controls.

I just began using Sony's Vegas last week, out of curiosity, because I'd heard many great reviews of it. The jury is still out, but so far my impression is that it's certainly a very nice product, yet a hair more frustrating to use than Pinnacle. I do like Vegas and am definitely going to give it a chance to grow on me... but so far I just haven't discovered any features which set it clearly above Pinnacle, to make the (slightly) less intuitive interface worthwhile. Again, I'm new to it, so I may very well discover that I'm wrong!

Pinnacle Studio Plus Version 10.8 for the moment. Used Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 as a video production intern at UWGB's campus cable station and LOVED it...will definitely go that route eventually.

First I wouldn't put Final Cut Express in teh same space as Premiere Elements. FCE is basically FCP without the batching capability. Having said that, I've used iMovie all the way up to FCP and Final Cut takes the cake. iMovie is nice for grabbing quick edits and plastering something up somewhere. When chasing, I use Pinnacle 10, just for grabbing a few clips to get uploaded.

As far as editing programs, it depends on your platform.

Mac = The choice is incredibly easy. Final Cut Express is unmatched in the consumer video editing platform (and I'm counting Windows programs too). It's Final Cut Pro minus a couple of features you probably won't use, just make sure you are shooting 30 fps or more, it doesn't support 24p. Final Cut Pro is pretty much the cats meow when it comes to video editing on a mac.

Windows = Tons of choices, tons of good choices. The most stable platforms are Vegas and Pinnacle IMHO, but people have their own preferences.

But more importantly, the first key to editing is to learn how to edit. 95% or so of people have zero clue how to edit video and make it interesting. Don't spend a ton of money on a great editor, having Final Cut Pro doesn't make you a professional editor. Knowing final cut pro doesn't make you a professional editor. Editing is an art form in and of itself, so don't think better software = better movies.

I would be willing to bet a good professional editor could out edit most people using any other software package just using Windows Movie Maker. So yeah, I would recommend learning how to edit and then finding a platform you are comfortable with and sticking to it. You learn to edit first, then you learn a platform to edit on :)
