It depends, really. You can use a Microsoft Lifecam USB webcam with your laptop and stream to youtube for less than $100 + data charges. On the flip side, you can spend 10's of thousands of dollars with satellite uplinks or bonded aircards and top of the line cameras. Then there's about 50 steps in between.

The best question is, what are you looking to do - Stream to a certain service? Youtube? TV? What is your budget?

Im gonna bump this one up!

Ive streamed the last couple years off and on. I was using the microsoft life cam and streamed through tvn. What im looking for now is a camera upgrade for that. Not trying to break the bank but looking for some thing that can record/ charge while streaming and something with zoom.

Ive been browsing around on amazon and have a few options but, wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions.

Not sure what your budget is but for a camera you can go with a Canon VIXIA HF R600 which does a really good job and is an affordable camera for what you're looking to do. Just keep in mind that the features you're looking for you going to have to spend at least a couple hundred for a decent camera.

Next step is you will need a capture card to connect your camera to your computer. Since you can't stream directly via USB from a camcorder you will need an external capture card. Cheaper option, Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle which will connect your camera via HMDI to the capture card then the capture card to your computer via USB. Then just use FLME, OBS, XSplit or whatever flavor of encoder you like or use or were using with your USB cam.

The second option which is more pricier but, will give you the best bang for your buck is to go with a Teradek Vidu which is a capture card/encoder and it will stream directly to TVN without having to go through your computer at all. Camera connects to the Vidu and the Vidu connects to the streaming service via wifi from your hotspot and no strain on your computer. Now that is a more pricey option as those run about $450 now for the Vidu but, it is the best bang for your buck. Configure it via the app then when your ready to stream push start and forget about it and let it run.

So you have options, just depends on what your budget is.

If you buy a 4K video camera from Sony, on all models (which I have tested) you cannot record in 4K & stream simultaneously. You can drop it down to HD and record that and stream, but not 4K.....just keep that in mind

Sent from my SM-N920V using Stormtrack mobile app

As of late, it seems a lot of people are using Periscope to stream the weather. Doesn't appear to look awful, and its an easy to get and use for most devices. You might consider that, depending upon what phone/tablet you have.

You will just need 3 things to do this:
Camera with A/V out. Many have this and a good HD camera can be had for around $100
USB Capture device to connect the camera to the computer. (http://www.amazon.com/EZ-Cap-EzCAP1...8&qid=1459368853&sr=1-16&keywords=usb+capture) $5 - $50
A way to mount the camera.

Doing a setup this way, you can have an HD dash cam, so you can zoom and turn the camera easily when needed. You can also be charging your camera easy if you have a power inverter in the car as well. With the capture device, your computer can easily use to stream. I used a setup like this for years. Eventually I got tired of just streaming the highway 90% of the time and not the storm. That is when I started building camera domes to try and fix that problem.

Small 4G tablet that doubles as hotspot with a window mount. Leave it plugged into power and can stream indefinitely. It has a pretty wide angle lens and good enough quality for most all online needs.

Some good ideas here. I'm fully prepared to upgrade to Teredek, however, I am struggling in the camera department. I need a camcorder that is decent quality, and decent low-light performance, that can run off of DC power. (Every bit of my chase gear, including laptop run off of DC, I have no inverters).

Any suggestions for a decent camcorder with an available DC adapter to power it live.

I don't think I've found one that didn't have an available adapter. As long as you have the right plug and voltage/current ratings you can get universal adapters to work with a large portion.

Purchased a Teradek for some projects we are doing at work, the pro edition ($999) and have to say it is quite a nice piece of equipment. Just set the thing and it goes - Streams right to youtube with great quality. I haven't tested it on anything but the super fast campus network, but it seems to be a good choice in the future.

I love my Teradek Vidu. Takes the strain off the computer and it is a all in one solution. Set and go, I don't babysit it. It goes down it is due to data but, nothing I can do there. You pair it will a cell booster and you have a fairly stable streaming rig. One of my better purchases.

@Ben Holcomb I have experimented with YouTube. The only downfall I have come across is the publishing URL changes with each live stream. Is that your experience too or do you know of a way to set a static publishing address so it is the same every time. The only feature I wish the Teradek had was the ability to stream to multiple platforms. I am sure the higher end models may accommodate this though.

I got the pro model, and didn't see any way to do multiples. Yeah the URL changes, although there might be a way coming in the future to fix that. That's easy enough, build a web page for your live streaming and just update the player code before you leave for the day.

I don't use the Vidiu to stream but I do use YouTube and I use the same url every time. I just set up a live stream named "Live Stream" and never change the settings. You can also in addition add a live event from Vidiu without affecting the "Live Stream" url. You will have to rename the video (Live Stream) after you finish. You don't get a fancy countdown timer either.
