I hope I can post this without it becoming political. The Governor's quote below is an articulate expression of the way Americans can show the world how we solve our problems here.

As a Texan, I'm proud of our governor today.

The Superdome refugees will make the 350-mile trip from New Orleans to Houston on 475 buses to be provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Governor Perry said. The Astrodome, which can provide living space for about 25,000 people, will be available to house them - and presumably other refugees - at least until December, and longer, if necessary. There are at least 10,000 people in the Superdome.

The governor also said that he would open the doors to Texas' public schools to children from out of state whose families were left homeless by the storms.

"By the grace of God, we could be the ones who have this extraordinary need," Mr. Perry said. "We're going to get through this together as one American family."

I received this today from a friend. Wish I had got it in time or I would have been there to help at least check folks in.

URGENT FYI ...

Subject: Harris County Citizen Corps: Urgent Request for assistance

From County Judge Robert Eckels:

Harris County Citizen Corps Members,

Today we are going to help those who have been impacted by Hurricane
Katrina who
are currently located in the Super Dome in New Orleans. Up to 25,000
citizens
are going to be relocated to the Astro Dome. We need your help.

We are requesting volunteers to assist in setting up the dome with cots
and
other basic necessities. This needs to be completed by 1700 or 5pm CST.
We need
for you to forward to anyone how can help through your businesses,
churches and
organizations.

We will also need volunteers to assist in the documentation and check in
of all
who arrive. CERT Teams will be needed to assist citizens from the
busses to the
check in locations.

Logistical information with locations and staging areas will be sent out
shortly. Please respond to this e-mail and let us know how many people
you have
that can assist, include time frames, as this will be a 24/7 operation.

This task is unprecedented and can be completed with the support of our
citizens.

Thank you for your continued support,
Harris County Judge Robert Eckels
Chairman Harris County Citizen Corps
