Tow Truck In A Box

All I can do is just sit here, scratch my head and wonder why I can't think of something like that!?!
Imagine the profit margin on that product!

Tow in a Box

Yeah someone is really gonna make some money. I suspect they spend 10X as much on advertising, than on making the product. It's just extruded plastic, likely costing about $1-$3 for each.

I'll bet that some of the creative (and financially restricted) chasers will come up with a simular solution using something a lot cheaper (like a small piece of house siding).

Is it plastic or aluminum? I was thinking about how you could make something similar after a trip to Home Depot, but once you purchase all the raw materials and spend the time making it, it's probably worth the $30 just to buy the product. Cool idea and something I need to add to my chase vehicle arsenal.

I wonder though if one set would be enough. If you don't have a limited slip differential, wouldn't you need a set for each drive wheel?

I have something similar that I bought at (I think) Big Lots a few years ago. I tried to use it one day when stuck in deep mud. It didn't help any at all. Maybe if you were in something not quite so deep....

From the infomercial, it is made from aluminum and you just connect the pieces together in the dovetail like hinge slots. It says you can get a few sets of them and make them as long as you want to get out of some tricky areas.

They showed some old lady putting them together and getting a car out of a muddy hole without any problem. Looks like the worst part is going back to pick the plates out of the mud.

I figure some aluminum pressed or forged in China that can be made for $2 per set with shipping to the USA, then sold for $29.95, someone is making a killing for thinking of something that is pretty obvious.

I was thinking about how you could make something similar that might even work better. Take a big Rubbermaid 33 gallon trash can and cut strips out of the sides, maybe 25"-30" x 5"-7". Then drill rows of 3 holes each about 6 inches apart, and use 1/4" round-top carriage bolts (that won't puncture the tires) to secure sections of aluminum bars every 6 inches on the plastic strips. The bolts would need to stick out a little on the underside to 'dig in' to the mud/ice, while the aluminum bars (scored with coarse sandpaper or a file to create a rough surface) would grab the tires. These could be rolled up and stowed away, and would be longer in length than the available product. I have a Home Depot gift card I got for Christmas, I may go do some experimenting.

I might give it a try..

Heres Why >>>>

We were stuck there for about 4.5 hrs.

In that situation, I don't think any box solution would be helpful. Otherwise, I think that "Tow Truck in a Box" is pretty cool and useful. Why didn't I think of that. I might get a set to keep in my regular car in case of emergencies. As for chasing, it looks a bit heavy to lug on a plane. Has anyone seen it for sale at Wal-Mart or truck stops as I might purchase when I get out to Tornado Alley. Thanks for posting as I didn't know such a product existed. I've used sticks, rocks and grass in the past for traction.

I have my doubts on that working. Well, at least on my truck it wouldn't work at all. I'd just use some long strips of shag carpet. Course if I get stuck something went terribly wrong :D:

Cool truck.

BUT the question on everyones mind is, dude what is your MPG rating with all that stuff? That can't be good with all the drag.

I took off most of my Jeeps grill guards and just have the push bumper up front and now I get 4-5 more MPG

Haven't figured it since I installed the bumper. It's not that bad really though. At stock I filled up once a week and that's still the case with all the additions.

Ok, you must not do too much highway driving then since I noticed a huge difference with my Jeep.

But Dang, that truck does look pretty freaking sweet.

I bet you don't get left lane loser in your way when you roll up behind them looking like your about to drive over the top of them.

Yes, I have truck envy.
