Thoughts on Carriers and Data

I am interested in getting an aircard and am wondering what carrier is best to go with. I plan on leaving the state on chases this year so data availbility in some of the boondock areas would be nice.

Also I think listening to pandora on the long drives and waits would be nice, how would this effect the data plan with all those caps.

Also would buying my card from fleabay, craigslist or some other outlet and then going to the att store save me on the contracts and high purchase price?

Ok here you go, I will be nice...

CDMA Carriers are going to give you the best "High Speed" rural coverage in the plains.
Verizon & Sprint being the best, I will try and break these down for you based on my thoughts...

Verizon:
Pros:
Hands down the best network on the plains, since they bought Alltel (A Rural carrier) they have the largest 3g footprint, you may have seen it in their ads.

Cons:
Expensive, Verizon don't have many ways to score a discount. Their 5GB cap is a hard cap so if you break it be ready to pay.

Sprint: (My preferred network)
Pros:
Sprint customer service has improved and is on the rebound, personally I never really call them.
If you can't get Sprint coverage you roam on Verizon, so you get the power of both networks... (See cons)
It's really easy to find a discount program with Sprint one way or another check sites like www.sprintusers.com or www.howardforums.com. I pay $45/mo for my card.
Sprint's cap is a "Soft Cap" meaning you need to break it 3 months before they will get angry with you, but I have yet to hear anyone get enforced on the "Soft Cap"

Cons:
The Sprint network has locations not on EVDO where Verizon is EVDO, so your going to find some pockets where your on 1x where if you had Verizon your would have high speed.

US Cellular:
Pros:
Great customer service however very small network of their own lots of roaming.

Cons:
Their own network is slow in most spots, being very slow about rolling out EVDO if at all, if you are roaming your always on 1x.

AT&T: (GSM) is not really big outside of the South, get north of ICT and you will find yourself on the EDGE network and roaming most of the time.

In the end if you are going to "Buy" the card look for discount sites like www.wirefly.com or www.letstalk.com they will more than likely have cards that are $99.99 at the store for free.

Sprint will not let you activate a eBay card without a 2year contract so there is no score with that, however you might pickup a free MiFi from some place like Wirefly, sell it for $200 and buy yourself a USB stick for less than $50 and pay a couple months service.

Verizon will let you activate a ebay card without a contract so you can turn it off when you don't need it, you will have to pay the $35 activation fee each time.

There are some datacard options for you

Verizon now has prepaid mobile broadband. All you need is a express card or a usb modem that costs $129.00. There is no contract. You can have it activated for $15 a day (75 mb allowance), $30 a week (250 mb) , or $50 a month (500 mb). I don't know if this has been mentioned in the previous threads because I am too lazy to do a search, lol. This may be a perfect plan for people that do not do a ton of chasing.

More info can be found here: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobilebroadband/?page=products_prepaidmb

Mobile internet

The best place to purchase mobile internet is www.millenicom.com . They are are a resller of all the different services. Because they are in Oregan there are much lower taxes. The biggest plus is no contract - You go month to month . They even offer an unlimited option through Sprint that Sprint does not offer to its customers.

Dear Zack

Alot of us have been on this road along long time and Newbies do need help and I understand that and so do alot of us but personal attacks by anyone reguardless of who it is will not win any points with some people or anyone. Let's be nice and not burn any bridges because it would be bad if no one wanted to help you or anyone. I'll be around here and there and if I can help I will and Listen to alot of people on here like Joey and Shane and alot of others on here. They can help you or anyone and Trust me Alot of these people have alot more experience then you or I or alot of other people. and remember one more thing "We are a Community and "We in alot of ways are "Family" and if newbies want to be a part of that family then they have to treat others with respect to get respect. with that said good luck in your search.

I agree with the search button as well. Also, I didn't know Shane had a show on Sunday nights, but it's pretty funny if you ask me. I think he nails the "newbie" chaser talk pretty good!

I think Sprint is a very good carrier, esp. since they now roam off Verizon. I have coverage probably over 90% of the time while chasing. I am sure Verizon is good as well, but have never used them.

I got a brand new laptop for christmas, with a Verizon air card already installed and activated in it. How well does the mobile broadband work for the people who use it? Also...the 5G cap a month...how quickly can you burn through that using what I have (MS Streets & Trips, GRLevel3, GPSGate)?

Thanks,

-Mat

It will take quite a bit of data to break the 5 GB cap. If you do a lot of streaming it will get close to that cap. MS streets & trips will not use any data & the same goes for GPS gate. GRLevel 3 doesn't use much data either. I have received radar updates several times while barely getting 56K phone modem speed. Verizon has a very expansive 3G network which will greatly be in your favor.

If you use your aircard as your primary source of internet, then you could burn through 5GB rather quickly. If you are only using it to chase, you should be fine.

I laughed at the outrageous costs for the prepaid data card plans....I mean, if you put it in terms of the 5gb plans, the same usuage would cost as much as $500 within the month instead of the normal rate of $60/month. The restrictions are so low on the pre-paid you are certainly going to bust through the limits (and end up paying more fees).

Ryan is right...to an extent. Even if you are not streaming video, uploading/downloading photos, video, etc. will quickly use up the bandwidth allowance too.

Pardon the ignorance here...but I have 2 settings on my laptop. WWAN, and WLAN. At home I have wireless internet, so my WLAN is used at that time. When I'm on the road...the WWAN is used (although I haven't tried it yet)...so...

How can I track the amount of data I'm using? I use the GRLevel3, MS Streets & Trips, GPSGate, and the BU353 Globalsat gps puck. The only thing I can think of that would require "internet" would be the GRLevel3...right??

Keep in mind...I just got this stuff for christmas, and I have yet to try it in the field. :D Can someone let me know if they use the same set up?
