Structure Failure Thread

Time to start this....keep things organized. Complete Structural failure beginning in New Orleans as reported by FOX News.

For formality sake - 3-by-5 (by some reports), or 1/12 (by some reports) of SuperDome roof compromised.

Harvey LA - Hotel collapse, reports of several people trapped.

Gulfport MS - Roof slammed into apartment building trapping several people, rescue attempts ongoing.

The pics just shown on MSNBC look like it's about 1% of the roof covering. That is a tiny hole in comparison to the size of the roof.

I was just goin by the Weather Channel's report on the SuperDome roof.

Also, from the NWS Site:

* AT 832 AM CDT...MANY REPORTS ARE COMING IN STATING TOTAL
STRUCTURAL FAILURE IN THE NEW ORLEANS METRO AREA.

Reports of hospitals in New Orleans with water coming into them.

Reports of the possibility of the roof coming off the hospital.

Parking garage coming apart at hospital...

N.O. ABC station reporting that 4 pumping stations have failed. 20 ft storm surge.
Also, windows blown out on first 5 floors of Charity Hospital.

Levee break near Industrial Canal (9th Ward) in New Orleans Parish, 3-8 feet of water coming over the levee right now. Heard on the radio and on the web at http://www.wwltv.com

Reports of:
* new report of a levee breach on the east side of NO.
* reports of people on their roofs. Does anyone know exactly where this is happening?
* Mississippi - reports of boats slamming into buildings
* reports of sail boats crossing highway 90

What else are you guys hearing?

Fox was reporting the "people on roofs"... I think that was east and southeast of New Orleans in that se tip of LA there. Someone on Fox even said "hundreds" of folks on their roofs, but I imagine this is drastically exaggerated.

On a related note... I love how some of the news folks show sheet metal floating around in the wind as if it takes massively high wind speeds to do that...

Gulfport Shelter Damaged.

Reports from Harrison Central 9th Grade School in North Gulfport are that three of four walls there have collapsed. Rescue efforts are in progress. There were about 100 people sheltered there.

I think that the 1/10th report was probably referring to the metal panels that cover the concrete roof sections on the dome, not the roof structure itsself.

"Entergy President Dan Packer said work crews would begin assessing damage to the power system Tuesday. But this much he already knows: Hurricane Katrina will go down as the worst the utility has ever experienced.

The situation Monday afternoon was "the worst we've had in our company's history,'' he said on WWL radio.

Packer said more than 700,000 customers - about 100 percent of the utility's customers in southeast Louisiana - were without power as of Monday afternooon."

Radio tower collapse in Ellisville, MS

My relatives live in Ellisville, MS (zip 39437). The 1000' radio tower next to their house came down. They said it didn't tip over - it collapsed on itself (as the engineers assured them it would when it was put up). One of the guy wires is anchored in their front yard. No injuries or house damage from that, although a large tree limb struck their roof. They've been huddled in their storm shelter most of the day.
