• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

staying connected

Dennis have you ever have any issues with having signal but not being able to get data with your att card ? I have has issues with ATT in MS in roaming areas receiving data even with 5 bars mainly on Highway 98 west in a known roaming area and also again outside of Mccomb,MS

I have not had that experience in MS, but ran into it in Broken Bow, OK. (SE OK) Great signal strength, showing connected, all looked right, but no data receiving as you mentioned. I disconnected several times and reconnected trying to solve it. I thought it was just some weird glitch. Finally, I just unplugged the data card and plugged it back in. Everything worked fine after that. Never did figure out what happened. I am only guessing, but I would guess it was conflicting with another service provider as cell phones sometimes use to do before they got better coverage and roaming agreements. Again, only guessing, but that is my thought since it was in a semi rural location.

Alltel only in NE, KS, and SD

I have had a Sprint phone here in Omaha for several years now. I can't even get a decent signal at my house here in the SW quadrant of an 800,000 metro area. If I'm not travelling I-80 or I-29, I'm outta luck. Besides, it took them eight months to get my CallerID name to appear correctly on other people's phones! July will be the last time I give money to Sprint.

I've since (last May) purchased a UTStarcomm 5750 (PCMCIA slot) from Alltel. My wife gets a deal on Alltel services through her workplace. So, I signed up for the $60/month plan and pay $51/month. Since I purchased the data card outright, I have no contract and renew/shutoff at any time. I should also mention that I purchased the Ultimate EVDO antenna kit (16175) from Gordon.

From Sioux Falls to Rapid City to North Platte to Dodge City to Wichita to Omaha, the only time I have lost service was in the Black Hills and then in an area between Hendley, NE and Norton, KS along US283. But, I expected that having looked at an Alltel coverage map. Fortunately, the lost signal was no more than ten or twenty seconds in duration and would re-connect almost immediately.

From all those I've spoken with in Omaha and Sioux Falls (we have family there), Alltel would garner a majority in Omaha and Verizon gets the nod in Sioux Falls, Dell Rapids, and Chester.

Cheers,
Geo

I had the same problem all yesterday afternoon in S/SE OK. This was from a tethering setup, not a card. The exact error message I was getting from my dialing program was:
"691 Access was denied because the user name and/or password was invalid on the domain."

I had the same thing happen on March 3rd in Southern MS. Very frustrating...

Tony, I was getting the error again yesterday sw of Wichita Falls. I found out that Verizon has a voice roaming agreement in that area but no data until nearly in Wichita Falls. So that sucks, but explains what the error is. Apparently this can happen with Alltel in others area as well. In my case I was in a US Cellular area.

I'm going to get something new - likely today or so. I may sign up with Sprint, or I may go with Alltel. Seems Sprint is good down south, and Alltel may be better up north. Opinions?

Bill I would go with Alltell if I were you. Buy an 815/816 Motorola phone off ebay cause they have the best RF and an antenna port so you can add an external antenna and amp down the road . They can be picked up new for under $50 if you look around and don't bid until the last minute. Once you get the phone call Alltell or go to the store and get it activated and be contract free. $39.99 plan data will use your plan mins and if you need more than that add the $24.99 modem option and that can be turned off and on when needed. It's better than sighning a 2 year contract with Sprint .

When I chased in Jack and Young counties on 4/3, I had pretty good coverage, but did see the 691 error two or three times. Seems like after moving down the road a few miles, I would get data again. This explanation makes a lot of sense, although it does suck because it makes getting data a bit more of a wildcard than I had hoped for. Strange that I did not seem to have so many issues in 2007, with the exception of NW Oklahoma. I expected that, since NW OK wasn't covered on their maps at that time.

Are you talking about going aircard with Alltel? Is that still a $25/month deal? Let us know what route you go.

Thanks,
Tony

Something strange is certainly going on with my alltell connection, while last year it wasn't unusual to not get data in a portion of NW OK, I typically had it everywhere else, this year while it's still pretty solid up North, I have noticed a decrease in coverage further South; it is one of two things. I am using a new phone (different than I had last year), though it is a newer "better model" phone, so I can't imagine the coverage has deteriorated due to the phone. The other scenario is Alltell's coverage has gone south, literally gone away done South. Last time I called them, they made it sound like they were having tower problems with other providers, though no word on if, when, or how that would be fixed. I'm going to be in contact with them here soon to see whats up, I'm not too worried, as coverage is still good North of OK, though I haven't covered a lot of the rural areas further North this year yet. I would just like to find out whats going on, I can't imagine why my coverage would get worse one year later, especially with whats suppose to be a better phone. If I don't get answers soon, I may begin looking into other providers despite Alltells sound coverage further North.

Well I went into the Sprint store a few hours ago and the guy told me I can go month to month without a contract if I buy the air card outright and in full. It would be $79 / month though. Likely I would still get a voice phone on a contract though.

$79 while more than Alltel may be a better option if there coverage is better. I know David Drummond and Steve Miller are both using Sprint with no complaints, and they are streaming data - just as I am - but they can do it at EVDO speed whereas I am still IXRTT or slower. Not sure about how Sprint fare further north though. I need to study these data coverage maps. What is the best source for these?
