Star Rating System

Hey Tarmo I realy dont care if you post stuff like that. You dont have to quit unless the staff asks you to. Dont let these guys push you around.

Maybe I'm just a rude idiot, and this is just me, but the only time I ever care to even think of the rating system is when I see a terrible post that served no real purpose other than to take up 15 seconds of my day. When I see a good, thought out post that everyone can benefit from I don't think to myself "Wow, I sure believe in my heart that I must give this post 5 stars. This poster deserves a cookie." I think posts like that are just supposed to be the norm. In fact, maybe the rating system just helps the not so beneficial posts stand out. Notice that the threads with very low star counts also have very low amounts of replies. Why should a post that has zero interest other than the person who posted it be rated highly?

But you know what? You all know you have the posters you don't like, and the posters who's threads you love to read. The rating isn't going to develop your opinion on if you should read the post or not, the thread topic and person who started it is.

The rating system will never become a widely used thing, and as long as it's there, the same style posts will be rated with 1 star by those who are sick of them, and those with a bunch of love to share will continue to try and boost the ratings of the threads with an "awwwww, poor ____" 5 star rating.

Also if your tired of Tarmo's posts then tell him you had enough. I am sure Tarmo would understand that some of you are annoyed with his posts about your everyday thunderstorm. It is not something I read and most people dont.

Tarmo as a friend I ment no offence but mabey you could wait and post about more exciting weather sometimes? Just a suggestion.

So rather than rating it lowly, you opt to tell him he should post something more exciting, lol....and not even in a PM. All the while saying don't let these guys push him around, of which I haven't seen anyone mention Tarmo's posts, other than Dewey as a reference name. So if you wouldn't read them, would you consider it average or higher? Or would that mean you think of it being lower?

*shrugs*

Actually, I'd be in favor of dropping the rating system. I don't think I've ever used it, except maybe once or twice.

Most likely the rating system is built in to the vBulletin software, and there may be no way to turn it off. Tim V could enlighten us on that. If it can't be turned off, then ignore it and leave it to those that care about it.

Shane, I didn't say that emotions were a problem. The influence of emotions on someone's judgement could be a problem.

I see your point Mike. Tarmo is the one who has been getting alot of low rated threads lately and the reason I believe why Rdewey started this thread. I should not have asked Tarmo to post something more exciting and just told him to post what he wanted to which I did in my later post. I feel people are just trying to push him around so he wont post stuff like that anymore but the staff never asked him to stop so why should he? To answer your question if I dont read it then it does not interest me. That does not mean it deserves a low rating.

Mabey I should not have said anything about Tarmo but I felt this was about him more than anyone else.

I was checking in the software if there was a way to turn them off but didn't see one. So I Googled it and a thread here about the stars came up #6 in google. LOL

There is an option to turn ON user reputations though.... heh

Turning ratings off doesn't sound that complicated. It's apparently not a GLOBAL setting, but done on a forum-by-forum basis. Let me know if that turns you loose in the right direction.

I thought the same thing, it was a global setting. This is an obsolete issue now. The old thread about this, and this one, neither one seems to overall support having it. I don't think most people even pay attention that it is there.

LOL... user reputations would be pretty funny. "Damn, this guy caught a tornado and I didn't; 1 star for him"

On the other board I was talking about, the reputation points you give out is directly proportional to your level of reputation. So, if I have a lot of 'spek and decide to give positive 'spek to someone that doesn't have much, it will give them a lot. On the other hand, if I want to drop the neg 'spek hammer, I could pretty much put somebody's all green bar deep in the red. Also, a person with not much 'spek that gives good 'spek to someone with a lot of green, doesn't make much of an impact.

I actually like the user reputations. You can give funny names to the different levels. For someone with the big, bad red 'spek bar, it could be "Death Ridge Deluxe." Or some other equally funny lines. I wish we could have more fun with this board, but there are so many people that take things too literally/seriously. It would never work.

So what happens to bad threads now?

Getting rid of the rating system isn't going to stop people from starting and continuing "terrible" threads.

Is there a way to change the text that goes along with the star? So maybe one star isn't "terrible" just "not so great."

Terrible threads probably don't draw that many posts in relation to views. They will eventually fall off the front page and into the chasm of obscurity.

If a thread turns bad (too much "noise," flaming, etc.) the mods should deal with it. ST seems to be well monitored in this regard, but I'm sure the mods would appreciate a little help.
Remember, you can report a post by clicking on the triangle with the exclaimation mark. You can also PM any member anytime, about any issue you have. I could add all those old sayings about lighting candles, catching files, etc., but I won't.

Well, here's what I've done. I have changed the settings so that there must be three votes for a thread rating to appear. That way the ratings on most threads aren't so biased.

As far as turning off the system completely, I don't see a need for that yet, but if so we'd do it in the usergroup permissions settings.

Tim
