What's the purpose of the star rating system, other than to satisfy those few bored souls that rank for spite? I notice a trend that certain posters will get a one-star rating no matter what the topic is (Tarmo, for instance); on the other hand, I notice that topics that are passionately hated by one or two ST members also seem to get a low rating. It's easy to take a guess at who's doing it, just look for disgruntled posts bitching about the topic. I'll start this one off with 5 stars and see where it goes from there.

To those people handing out ratings just to be spiteful, you seriously need to get out more lol

I have noticed this to. I dont understand why people must act like this. I think the rating system needs to be changed or removed. Just my oppiniun.

hmmm i just gave it 5 stars but it didnt budge.. Dont worry Rdewey Im only a 2 star guy Im sure.. And it appears your a 3.. lol

The problem isn't the rating system. It's that too few people use it. So one disgruntled poster can toss out "terrible" ratings and since nobody else rates the thread it stays at one star. Often the thread starter doesn't even vote.

If more people voted you'd get a more accurate sample of what people really think.

It seems to me most of the 1 star "spite" ratings are warranted, lol. IMO we need a half star option.

I agree with Bill, it'd help if more used them. I can't speak though since I never bother, even when I want to do a "spite" single star(hardly spite when one thinks it's pretty stupid anyway).

ehhh,

So, okay.. can we give a thread stars although we havent posted?? I think we can.. hmmmm

Maybe we need an different system. Color code the stars.

Gold: excellent quality overall = 3 points.
Silver:valuable, but with some questionable content = 2 points.
Bronze: good, but needs improvement = 1 point.

Gray: poor quality = -1 point.
Brown: questionable = -2 points.
Black: terrible = -3 points.

Of course the problem with ratings on a board like this is the infulence of emotions. Everyone here is interested in storms for some reason. Most reasons involve emotions, and it is very hard to keep those emtions from affecting how we regard things.

Emotions aren't the problem, they're actually a good thing. Without them, this place would be WX-CHASE, and we don't need two snore grouplists/forums.

Who really cares? We've discussed it before. Are you really basing the threads you will and will not read on how many stars it has? If you feel bad because someone is being picked on because their daily posts recieve constant "one star" ratings, why not just send them a cheery pm, or an e-card to try and boost their moral?

There is a pattern, and I don't think it's spite. I think it's just people getting annoyed. If you notice, it's the same group of people recieving the ratings. Then those people continue to post the same thing day in and day out. Maybe it's more of an "enough." rating than an "I don't like you personally because you have wronged me in the past" rating.

I don't know how much more good it would do to have more people using it. I don't think I would feel better about my threads if 100 people were giving it a 1, rather than 5.

If anyone cares, I rated this thread with 1 star. Not because Robert has personally wronged me in some way or I need to send some spite his direction. Rather, because I felt the need to express my feelings that this is just another "when are we going to get rid of..." or "when are people going to stop..." threads that we've had just about enough of.

I rarley vote on threads but I will to my own sometimes when I know people who dont like me give a 1 star rating for anything I post or on threads with low ratings. I am tired of people doing this. I dont see why they must do it. I get low rating on almost every single thread I start and some of them are good or descent or I feel they are. Mabey I dont post as much quality stuff as some people would like.

Also if your tired of Tarmo's posts then tell him you had enough. I am sure Tarmo would understand that some of you are annoyed with his posts about your everyday thunderstorm. It is not something I read and most people dont.

Tarmo as a friend I ment no offence but mabey you could wait and post about more exciting weather sometimes? Just a suggestion.

Also dont forget everyone Tarmo has Aspergers Syndrome and he may post what he does for reasons we would not know. I know a friend who has AS and he once started a flurries observation thread. Nothing wrong with that but alot of people would see it as a waste of time or nothing speacial or not worth replying to so they probibly think why bother posting it? I assume because of AS mabey they just feel the need to keep busy or some other reason linked to AS. I dont know what people with AS go through but I just think that has something to do with the way they post and what they post. Mabey Tarmo needs to explain why he posts what he does so we have a better understanding. Mabey then people wont be so annoyed with him. I will leave it at that and stay out of this.

Just be thankful we don't have "reputation" points on this board. Another board I post on has it...it's a sports board. Usually, the only people that get "negative 'spek" are rivals from hated teams, trolls, or generally stupid people. Nobody takes it too seriously though.

Something like that would DEFINITELY not work here! LOL.

All righty then, I will post next time about local thunderstorms here when half of the country gets wiped off the map by EF-5 tornado. That would probably pass the treshold to post here. Just in this climate, such things are rare to come. Last time I had something more major was in May 15, what also featured a 1.7 cm diameter hail. Also, some more activity was seen in the last week of May when it was unusually warm, a record number of buildings were ignited by lightning. June has been peaceful. The end.

Edit: But is it OK if I post weather pictures? Don't worry, I see other clouds than cumuluses too.
Edit 2: Maybe the rating system should be public so we could see who voted what. Also, if somebody really has a vendetta against me, there is an ignore button. Use it and my posts will be hidden.

I kind of agree that the more people that use it, the more accurate the rating. When I see an interesting topic rated as one star, I'll give it a five, which jumps the rating to 3 starts. That means that I'm most likely the second person to rate the topic - not a very good sample size.

Most people ignore the star system altogether, which is why I thought it was just another useless option using up ST resources. If someone really has a problem with another user and/or their content, just use the PM feature.

I see I'm down to 3 stars now lol.

Anyway, no hard feelings... I just have to bitch sometimes.
