Slo-Mo Hail Cam

Image.jpeg
Just a quick note on the importance of looking for physical mechanisms that help to create & grow unusually large hail.
In this SPC-adapted figure (Pojorlie, Doering, & Fowle 2013,) notable Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) resides in the -10 to -30 degree C layer of the atmosphere at 5:00 p.m., July 23, 2010, a large factor for gigantic hail formation. The basic CAPE was closer to 5000 J/kg.

The Vivian (star) storm in south-central SD made ample use of that amidst other factors, including those crucial for supercell maintenance.
But even though Vivian, SD comes out top dog for weight & diameter, the reigning champ for circumference remains Aurora, NE, June 22, 2003. Considering protuberances & spikes for circumference, it's 18.75" versus 18.62" around. Sorry Vivian, though I guess two out of three ain't bad.
