So with the new camera ordered for video, I figured I'd have to shell out another $100 for a decent SD card for storage. BUT I WAS WRONG!! SD cards are really cheap now-a-days. I see a lot of companies have really fast cards >90 MB/s (I assume for 4k cameras) and great amount of space. I'm looking at buying a 64 GB class 10 @ 90 MB/s for $30. Anyone know why the prices suddenly plummeted? Is it because of the high demand of SD cards in many electronics today? BTW I saw a 512 GB class 10 @ 95 MB/s on sale for a small price of ~ $600 :D

The drop isn't sudden...been dropping for years. I think I've paid about $20 for each SD card I own....and i have several ranging from 1gb to 16gb. Have more in my amazon cart...less than $20/ea for 32's.

Id guess next year your 64s will be under $20. 2-3 years from now we'll have TB cards under $100.

This news pleases me since I need to pick up a 32GB for my Midland XTC. The box says it takes UP to 32GB but I don't see why I cant put a bigger one in there.

Im guessing the price drop is simply the result of demand and increased brand competition.

It is kinda of a rule of technology, especially technology like memory. 6 months and your technology is essentially out of date. With that though, the price scale shifts upward contantly on how much memory you get for that price. 8GB cards used to be the price that 32GB are now a few years ago and 128GB will be at the price 32GB is now in a few years. Just how it works. Even SDD are getting cheap. 128GB are around $60 now.

Key to when you are buying technology, if you can wait, it will save you money.

Edit: One thing prices has not dropped on yet though is the wifi SD cards. Those prices are still way up there.

Supposedly they will be having new SD cards coming on the market for the new Sony 4k cameras to shoot in full 4k. With that said, SD card prices have dropped significantly. I with the 128GB Micro SD card would drop though! I am out of space on my phone with the 64GB card, need a 128GB one.

I "RSS" a bunch of "Deal of the Day" sites, and check them almost daily. It was around a couple years ago that removeable memory media started breaching the 50 cents/GB barrier on a semi-regular basis. Nowadays if you pay $.50/GB you haven't made any effort to find a good price at all. With a little patience and research expect to get a 64GB card for $25 or less.

BTW, every once in awhile I like to do a little geeky thing when in an electronics store: Wave a 64GB stick at an employee and ask this question: "Remember floppy disks? Do you know how many floppies you'd have to use to get the same storage?"

(Answer: The most common floppies held 1.44MB, so... 44,000... more or less)

To your point Wes, I just picked up a 128 GB card for $60 on Amazon. I think that's a pretty good deal based on what I paid previously for my 32s a few years ago.

Until 4K, currently you only need a fast SD card if you shoot a lot of fast things. I wouldn't shoot anything slower than a 90MB/s card at an air show but for storm chasing I'll use just about anything as I'm not blasting off 15 frames in a row at full resolution when chasing usually.
