Has anybody else noticed that it is a lot harder to get a current visible satellite image this year? I usually go to COD for satellite, but most of the time when I check it's at least 45 minutes old. I have even seen a couple over an hour old. I go to RAP and mesoscale analysis page for backups and they haven't been much better. I don't know if I'm going crazy, but I swear to god it was never like this before. In the past the images were always current. Is there something different this year? If you know of a better way to get current images let me know. I watch satellite constantly when I'm in the field chasing and this is really starting to bother me.

Nothing has changed. You might check your cache settings, maybe your browser just isn't letting an update through. Or it could be your ISP. Just get GEMPAK and your worries are over ;)

The 1015pm CDT visible image just came in on my machine at 1025pm CDT.

No Goes

I have felt your pain...

April 14, 2010. The GOES East satellite, GOES-12, was replaced this afternoon with GOES-13 at approximately 18:34 UTC. Please note that the data will be noisy and irregularly mapped over the next week or two. We are having issues with Full Disk GOES East imagery and with the zoom feature for the Hurricane sector of GOES East.

The sat images from CoD have been off-and-on for me the past few events as well. I cleared my cache, etc., but I was still only getting an image about an hour old earlier this afternoon. At the time, the RAP UCAR page had the correct, most recent sat data (accounting for the usual 10-20 min lag).

EDIT: Hank, did you copy/paste that from somewhere?

That's from an NWS statement. The bird has also been wobbly as well, as they put the finishing touches on getting it exactly right. I noticed it yesterday quite a bit. They're pretty much done now, but yes, images have been missed and the navigation has been off at times. Par for the course for a new satellite in the first couple of weeks of operation. The good news with this bird is that there are no "keep alive" outages like there were before, for 90 minutes at various times of the day. GOES-11 (west) still must do that, however.

Yeah it sounds like you were right there with me Jeff. I would go to RAP and mesoscale analysis page if I couldn't get a current image from COD. It was about 50/50 on whether one of those pages would have a more up to date image. I depend on satellite a lot when I'm in the field waiting on a storm. It is pretty much always up on my laptop, so it was a pretty big problem for me. At least now I know what was going on. That makes me feel a lot better. I thought maybe the government cut funding or something and I was stuck with the new update cycle lol. Sounds like it should be fixed for our next chase. thanks for the answers guys
