Roof Racks To Protect From Hail; Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm planning on starting a build of a hail guard now, as a matter of fact. Right now, I'm thinking about doing a mixture of what @Dan Robinson did and what @Adam Lucio did. The magnets (for easy removal) and the side window guards. I may make a notch system in the metal (like what crutches or chairs use to adjust size/fold or unfold) so that it's easy to deploy the window guards. I'm going this weekend I think to get the materials I need. As of the mesh part, I'm going to use metal fencing and see how that holds up on my test vehicle (the jeep)

use a Yakima bike rack----- then use Aluminum square tubing -----from-------Metal Supermarket.......... with mesh over it.........that will give you some protection OR some kind of metal cage on it.........from hail................. that is what I am going to do............also need to find a great welder...........that can weld it all together and do it right. Maybe I am too old, here, but in my experience when I got a Jeep to storm chase I found myself goung down roads I shouldn't have, being overconfident in the 4wd.

I have thought about hail shielding many times, coming back to it in my mind with every new chase vehicle, and I keep going back to my style of chasing, which includes a strong desire not to be under the really big hail. Then I think back on the Jeep and the temptation, and so far keep coming back to avoiding the temptation and not setting up a permanent hail shield.

I did amazingly well last year of skirting the edge of the big hail, but still being well positioned to see the action and get some good pictures - maybe too close once or twice, can't see the mothership when under it. Still, got to drive by ICECHIP crews and did not get significant dings.

Your mileage will vary, of course.
